More to sign stealing story
To the editor:
The article that the Star-Herald published about political sign stealing seemed to make light of the crime. I respect the decision of District 7 representative candidate Troy Haines not to press charges but he is not the only victim. The person who stole the signs trespassed on private property to get the signs and trespassed again the next day to return them. Those property owners were not asked if they wanted to press charges.
The article portrays the crime as simply a mischievous teenaged prank. Missing from the article is the identity of the person who stole the signs. It is important for the voting public to understand the close relationship between the person who committed the crime and Haines’ opponent.
I know Troy to be a tireless advocate for common sense legislation that will benefit all Maine citizens. Troy is a lifelong resident of Mapleton and operates a small meat processing business here. He understands the problems of small business owners and will be an effective legislator. The ethical way he has run his campaign shows me that he understands that doing the right thing is important. Unfortunately ethical conduct isn’t always what gets people elected and far too often unethical politicians are rewarded. I hope that is not the case this time.
I will be voting for Troy Haines in the hope that ethics and values still matter.
