ASHLAND NEWS
by Susan Feeney Hopkins
The Grand Chapter of Maine Order of the Eastern Star very generously donated much needed school supplies to the Ashland District School. The Eastern Star is a beneficent organization, and recognizing that many students return to school without the proper supplies and tools, whether due to budget cuts or struggling family finances, decided this year one of their community projects would be to donate school supplies to local schools.
Heather Clark, worthy matron of Tillikum Chapter, and Sheila Buckingham, district deputy grand matron of District 19, presented Ashland District School Principal Chris Hallett with 124 packages of school supplies donated by members of the Tillikum Chapter 99, Order of the Eastern Star.
Items donated included pens and pencils, pencil boxes, holders and sharpeners, rulers, glue sticks, notebooks, highlighters, erasers, scissors, a hand-held calculator, crayons, assorted markers, index cards and a tape dispenser. Thanks to this thoughtful and generous donation, our school children have benefited greatly, making their learning experience that much better.
There won’t be a whole lot of action at the polls for the Ashland area districts. Besides the general election, the following items will be on the Nov. 2 ballot:
• Ashland has two incumbents, Mary Casey and Sandra LaBelle, both wishing to retain their seat on the school board.
• Portage Lake has one school board term/seat up for election bid. Up for re-election is Geraldine Condon.
• Masardis has no current seats to fill.
