The Houlton girls’ varsity soccer team held “Shires Kick Cancer” game on Sept. 21, with parents and the greater Houlton community donating gifts, money, gift certificates and more to be auctioned off.
The girls’ team was able to raise $400 to give to the Bridge For Hope Foundation. “It was a great night and we are very thankful to all those who helped to make it happen,” said Houlton coach Tim Tweedie.
The Lady Shires defeated Lee Academy, 4-0, which was icing on the cake.
“I talked to the girls about how in the past we had worn pink laces, pink hats, pink leggings and all of that was for the purpose of cancer awareness,” Tweedie said. ‘But, I wanted them to realize 1 in 5 people in the United States will be inflicted with cancer. We all have lost someone close to cancer.”
Tweedie knew his players were aware of the seriousness of cancer.
“It was a time to do something about it,” he said. “The girls were happy to oblige. They worked their butts off to make it happen and they didn’t get any practice time off to work on it. It was all above and beyond their regular practice requirements.”
