100 Years Ago-September 14, 1910
Monticello — Roy Good, who spent the summer at Mt. Kineo resort on Moosehead Lake, arrived home last week to spend a short vacation with his mother, Mrs. Albert Smith. He will coach the Ricker football team three weeks before returning to Colby College to resume his duties.
White Settlement — Mr. George Welton threshed five hundred and twenty-four bushels of oats in three hours and twenty minutes for F.A. Barton.
Houlton — Thirty hoboes who were locked up on Sunday for vagrancy and who could not be tried on election day, escaped from jail, this saving the County the cost of feeding and trying them. Doubtless they will make tracks for other parts.
75 Years Ago-September 12, 1935
Future Farmers — Four pleasant days were spent at Mt. Katahdin by 12 boys of Meduxnekeag Chapter, Future Farmers of America. Those attending were James Hall, Fred Boutilier, Claude Adams, Chester Adams, Lisle Wiggin, Carl Annett, Arnold Stewart, Phillip Callnan, William Stantial, Albert Donovan, Stephen Chase and James Briggs.
Monticello — Ralph Syphers has taken over the filling station recently run by Montford Hill and will also run a lunch counter and pool room.
Accident — Three people, two men and a woman from Vermont, riding on a motorcycle struck the rear end of a truck driven by Bernard Britton as he was turning into his home. The men were not injured badly, but the girl received many bruises and was obliged to stay at the Brittons over the weekend.
50 Years Ago- September 15, 1960
Storm — Hurricane Donna arrived at 11:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 and departed at 2:43 a.m. leaving behind an untidy mess. Unlike her predecessors, Donna did very little damage and for the most part acted almost like a lady. Her famous sister, Edna, who made her debut almost six years to the day in 1954 created damages of $100,000 in this area.
Room shortage — The serious problem of housing Ricker College students, due to the increased enrollment was brought to the attention of Aubrey A. McLaughlin, director of Industrial Development. Of the 300 students enrolled, there are approximately 70 male students who are in need of housing.
Bomb shelter — Mindful of the possibility, however remote, of an atomic war, a Houlton couple, Mr. and Mrs. Dalton Clark, are completing construction of a fall-out proof shelter underground next to their home and place of business on the North Road.
25 Years Ago-September 11, 1985
Ricker scholarships — Otis Putnam, chairman of the Ricker College Board of Trustees accepted a check for $178,000 from Bernard Maher, Trustee in Bankruptcy as a settlement of the estate of Norville and Iona Reid. The money has been added to a fund that is nearing $1 million, the interest from which will be used to provide Ricker scholarships to students from throughout Aroostook County.
Harvest — SAD 29, which comprises schools in Houlton, Littleton and Monticello will move their potato harvest recess schedule ahead by a full week, with the three-week recess beginning, Monday, Sept. 16. This also applies to St, Mary’s School in Houlton.
Manuel retires — Glen Manuel was back on the farm in Littleton last week after announcing that he was retiring from his position as Commissioner of Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
On tour — Steven Douglas of Houlton has recently begun a one-year tour with Cast B of the international, educational program, Up With People. Steven, 23, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Douglas and is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine.
