Presque Isle soccer league
continues with busy slate
In game one of the scorching-hot second week of play in the Presque Isle Recreation Department’s youth soccer league, the Rapids hosted the Crew for the week opener. The Rapids scored first and scored often with Issac Devine breaking the ice followed by goals by Griffin Guerrette and Ethan Clark (who was assisted by Guerrette) and Breanna Byrd ended the scoring frenzy after receiving a great pass from McKenzie Turner.
For the Crew, Denny Young stole a goal kick from the Rapids and finished it off by lacing the ball into the back of the net. Also for the Crew, Emily Wheaton and Camden Bates showed great heart and effort throughout the contest, but the Rapids won by a score of 4-1.
In the second game of the day, the Clash took on the Express with a dominant 6-1 victory. Posting a hat trick for the Clash was Jordan Bonville, assisted on one by Ryle Mortland, who also had a goal in the contest. Caleb Page added two goals with an assist on one by Yessenia Vilar. As for the Express, Tyler Levesque had the sole goal, being assisted by Maxx Langille.
The Mutiny faced off against the Sting and Randon Mortland had the only two goals of the contest, assisted both times by Jack Beaulieu, in the 2-0 Sting triumph. Adam Paterson earned the shutout in goal for the Sting. As for the Mutiny, Gavin Kelley, Madison Bearden and Kyle Plourde played very hard in the losing effort.
On Friday the last group of games took place beginning with the Blast taking on the Drillers. This game was an all-out defensive battle with Colby Buckley and Ricky Goupille combining for the shutout in goal for the Drillers. William Bridges served up a second-half shutout for the Blast, which was a little too late as Jacob Bonville assisted Jake Stevens on an indirect kick, which turned out to be the only goal in the Drillers’ 1-0 win.
The second game featured the Missiles blanking the Sounders, 4-0. The Missiles jumped out to an early lead with Zech Morse assisting Chris Bearden on back-to-back goals in the first four minutes of the contest. Also for the Missiles, Alex Harvath and Patrick Lessardboth added goals with Torey Levesque and Zech Morse combining for the shutout in the game. The Sounders’ Jacob Sjoberg showed a lot of heart in the losing effort.
In the final game of the week, an extremely exciting game took place. The Hurricanes took on the Tornados in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw. The first half was scoreless, with the Tornado’s Libby Boone and the Hurricane’s Sophia Lambert playing very intensely. The second half started off with a bang when the Tornado’s Amelia Theriault burned the back of the net. As the half went on the Tornados dominated down to the final eight seconds when Libby Moreau for the Hurricanes snuck in a shot to knot the score.
On Aug. 25, the Galaxy and the Tornados went at it in a girls’ third- and fourth-grade contest. Amelia Theriault scored twice, one coming off an assist from Libby Boone, as the Tornados came out on top, 3-1. Libby Boone also scored for the winners, who also received strong defensive performances from Acacia Johnston, Clair Hopkins and Mayce Kinney.
Savannah Rodriquez scored for the Galaxy off a Rebecca Rider assist. Leila Fonbeuna, Emma Bouchard and goalie Christina Plummer starred on defense for the Galaxy.
The Hurricanes and Blizzards also played that afternoon, with Liliana Wardwell scoring the game’s only goal early in the second half in the Hurricanes’ 1-0 triumph. Also for the Hurricanes, Sophia Lambert, Allison Madore and Emma Postell all played hard-nosed soccer the whole contest.
On the other side of the field, Molly Kingsbury, Kaci Bates, Kamryn Gilmour and Paige McHatten played their best for the Blizzards, only to fall short by a single goal.
In the final game of the day, the Sounders took on the Blast in a boys’ matchup. The Sounders broke the ice with Carter Rice scoring the first goal of the contest by weaving through the defenders and torching the net. Also for the powerful Sounders, Jacob Sjoberg was a dominant force by scoring two goals and adding an assist on Rice’s tally.
Will Bridges put the Blast on the board, but it came late in the contest as the Sounders prevailed, 3-1.
Aug. 26 action saw the Express beat the Crew, 2-1; the Rapids got past the Mutiny, 2-0; and the Sting stopped the Clash, 3-2.
On Aug. 27, the Blizzards notched a 2-0 victory over the Tornados; the Galaxy upended the Hurricanes, 3-1; and the Missiles came up with a 3-2 win over the Drillers.
