Owl teams successful in openers
PRESQUE ISLE – The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s soccer teams earned season-opening wins against Unity College at home on Sunday afternoon.
The men placed seven different players in the scoring column as they went on to earn the impressive 7-1 win over the Rams. The Owls placed 44 total shots on goal in the game, as they showed their early-season depth and talent.
First-year player Kyle Corrigan of Caribou opened scoring with an unassisted goal in the first 30 minutes of play. Senior Ben Costello of Old Town put in what turned out to be the game-winning goal off an assist from freshman Lucas Bartlett of Bradford in the 43rd minute of first half play.
Chris Smith, Devon Peaslee, Bartlett, Stephen Sweatt and Tyler Harding were the other Owl goal scorers. Joshua Peaslee, Matt Carrington, Carl Nemer and Corey White picked up assists.
The Owls next host Thomas College on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.
On the women’s side, junior Desiree Smith of Thomaston played an excellent game, scoring both goals to give her Lady Owls team the 2-0 victory over Unity. Smith’s unassisted first goal came in the 24th minute of play as she beat her defender to find the back left corner of the net. In the 51st minute, freshman Susan Lavertu of Madawaska found Desiree to give the Owls its second and final goal.
UMPI placed 26 shots on goal in their winning effort, and earned 11 corner kicks.
The Owl defense was outstanding in the game, not allowing any shots on goal or corner kicks from the Rams.
The Lady Owls continue their season as they host the Terriers of Thomas College on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 3 p.m.
