Students at Cornerstone Christian Academy on the Caribou Road in Presque Isle have a new way to spend their free time outside, thanks to a private donation to the school’s Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF). The PTF is an organization comprised of parents of students attending the school who were overseeing the search for new playground equipment at the time a significant donation was made to the school.
According to the school’s Administrative Assistant, Bonnee McLaughlin, the process began last fall when the 2009-10 school year began and it was obvious the students had very little to do during their outdoor recess time.
“Soccer and kickball were popular with many and the younger students had a small swing set to use. Some students made up their own games, becoming amazingly creative” said McLaughlin. “Still all greatly sensed the need for something that offered more options to the children.” The monetary gift was large enough to purchase a playground system that allowed for many children to all enjoy its features at the same time.
The new set is a multi-functional system featuring three slides, a climbing wall, two swings, a teeter-totter, ropes, shaded picnic table, roofed platform with balcony, ladder and an attached tic-tac-toe game.
McLaughlin said “several dads had ‘fun’ assembling the playground system on a Saturday in mid-April. When the students returned from April vacation they were all smiles as they christened the new playground system! There was much joy and laughter as the children took turns playing on all the different features. Although the soccer and kickball games are still played and other pieces of equipment used, this new system is much preferred and most enjoyed by all. We are so very thankful to those who donated the funds for this system! It will continue to be the gift that keeps on giving as students enjoy it for years to come!”
