VaJoWa enjoyed a busy Labor Day weekend of golf. Golfers took advantage of seasonal weather  and great course conditions. The much needed rain of Friday night and Saturday morning softened the course and provided for great scoring opportunities. The greens remain in great shape and aeration is not planned until later in the season, so you can expect great putting surfaces through September.
A sign-up sheet is in the Pro Shop for the Mars Hill-VaJoWa Challenge Match scheduled for Sept. 18 and 19. Make sure you sign up if you want to participate. The format is match play and is played one day at Mars Hill and one day a VaJoWa. The first day will be a two-man best ball and the second will be individual matches. The $40 entry fee includes golf with cart for the two days and appetizers after your round.
Winners of the 2010 Twilight League were Chet Chase and Jim Dyer. They needed three extra holes,  after the match was all even at the end of 18 holes at 76 each, to defeat Dan Cullen and Ben Walker.  Dyer’s par on the third hole was good enough for the victory. Losing in the semis to the eventual champions by a score of 36 to 33 were Steve Merry/Steve Edwards. Scot Walker/Jon Smallwood went down to the Cullen/Walker team 36 to 35.
Another good crowd turned out for couples golf on Sunday afternoon. Play was a scramble format and  the winners were Jenness Gushee, Bev Osborn, Cecil Hanson and Sara Douglas. In a tie for second were Greg Gayne, Becky Kelley, Betty Smallwood and Greg Douglas; and Jon Smallwood, Francis Cyr,  Stephanie Gleason and Jeanette Harvey.
Next Sunday couples will again meet at 3 p.m. All are welcome. They play nine holes and most usually stay and enjoy a meal at Craig’s Maine Course Restaurant in the clubhouse. A reminder to put together a team for the Diabetes Benefit Scramble on Sept. 25. It is a 9:30 a.m. shot gun start and entry fee is $50 per person which includes golf, cart, and prizes.  Please sign up  your team in the Pro Shop.
