Another highly successful Babe Caron Member/Guest two-day event was concluded Monday after being set back a day for heavy rain on Saturday, making the course unplayable.
The first-day winners (half handicaps) ending in a three-way tie at 11 under par were Reggie Grant/Harry Orser; Mike Fogarty/Jerry Diphilippo and Bill Dwyer/Warren Walker.
Second-day winners (full handicaps) were first, Dan Peabody/Chris Cheney; second, Jerry Adams/Trevor Adams and third, tie, Dennis Wright/Andy Wright and P.J. Madore/Patrick Welch.
It was also a fine social event as many players with Houlton roots came from all over the state. Family names that are familiar with golf included the Grants (David and Reggie), Goodwins (Rick, Gabe and Zach), Peabodys (Dan, Aaron, Todd and Andrew), Dwyers (Bill, Lou Anne, Doug and Gary), Adams (Jerry, Trevor and Troy), Yorks, (Dick and Jerry), Wrights (Dennis and Andy), Walkers (Scot and Warren) and Pierces (Tom and Andy).
On a personal note, I had an enjoyable chat with Andy (Pierce) and his mother Barbara, whose late husband Francis, was an avid golfer and supporter of the Houlton Community golf course. We reminisced about Houlton golf and well-remembered times and people.
Jerry York had the most memorable hole on Sunday on number one, as he hit his tee shot out of bounds, hit his second shot with his provisional ball into the cup for a remarkable par.
Congrats to the winners and Houlton Community golf course for a well-planned and enjoyable weekend.
