    Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week is Sept. 19-25. According to research done by Petfinder, shelters nationwide have difficulty placing the following pets: 29.9 percent said they had problems placing senior/older pets, 15.3 percent said pets with medical issues and 54.2 percent said “big black dogs.” To celebrate this “special week” the Central Aroostook Humane Society staff will be having a promotional adoption fee on these special animals. From Sept. 19 through 30, each animal at the shelter with a special cage tag will be half off the regular adoption price. We will go through the shelter, decide who has been there the longest, who has health issues and who we feel may be a little less adoptable and tag the cages and offer half price on their adoptions.

    Although it is still warm, fall is here and with it comes a whole new hazard and things to consider. When walking or hiking in the woods with your pets in the fall and early winter seasons, it is important to take some precautions. Fall is one of the busiest times for wildlife, as many animals are on the move, actively foraging for food and shelter, mating before winter and avoiding hunters. There are several things you can do to keep you, your family, and your pets safe and sound:
• Be aware of state hunting and trapping regulations;
• Steer clear of areas where hunting is allowed;
• When walking or hiking in the woods with your family and pets, be sure everybody wears brightly colored outerwear;
• Do not allow your dog to chase deer or other wildlife;
• When walking in areas where hunting is permitted, talk loudly and make noise periodically to alert any hunters of your presence; and
• Know your route and stay on marked trails and pathways.
    I for one am scared to death of running into a bear in the woods with my dogs, so I am always sure to talk loudly and make plenty of noise.
