Small Business MattersWhile we are continuing to wrap things up and plan for the inevitable end of days here at the CCC&I, we keep receiving calls and visits, and much e-mail from a variety of folks.

We received our very fabulous Common Ground Country Fair posters this week in the mail – Sept. 24th to the 26th (mark your calendars). I also learned they have an art contest each year and award the poster design to someone (where have I been you ask? I don’t know). That was a good thing, and we received another patch of great materials from Get Real Get Maine. Bright spots.

But what I received last week for the first time from a former DFAS friend, who’s since moved on to Louisiana no less, was a connection on Linked In, which brought up a veritable whole new world for me: Groups. I am something of a lazy Internet person. While I believe in shopping therapy, and we need a boost these days, I am really too lazy to paw and wait, and click and paw, and wait for various screens to come up. So, it’s no wonder I had not explored any of the “groups” on Linked In.

As some folks may remember, one of my loan clients turned me on to Linked In about two years ago, with a “hey, have you heard of, and you need to join” pitch. Well, so I did. And then didn’t do much with it for a year or more. But by the goodness: huh! I found the best connections to a variety of non-profits and their ongoing dialogs about various topical things this week! I am a renewed fan, I don’t have to hunt and peck and click and pick, I join the group and then scan the topics being whirled around on the World Wide Web, and POOF, there they are. I know, it’s funny stuff, but I have found all kinds of great things the last few days, and connected to a whole new patch of folks, who just might be interested in coming to northern Maine to visit, spend a few dollars, visit again, that kind of thing. Much less, I found two new programs with SBA for micro loans, which I just know people who might be eligible for assistance through. Unbelievably cool.

So for all you folks thinking you have a Linked In, just because, well! I need to tell you, there are some very cool things you can do with it, which rank right up there with National Public Radio, and you don’t have to spend any time at all with the hunting and pecking.

Remember, we’re still looking for one last drawing item, and we’re thinking about all the farmers. Happy Safe Harvest!
