Vandalism reported at park

PRESQUE ISLE — Vandalism was reported over the weekend at the Aroostook State Park.
Park officials were notified Sunday that the stone steps leading from the parking lot down to Echo Lake had been defaced.
“After checking the stairs, it became apparent that, yes, we have received some damage to the steps but I believe that it will come out after a good winter storm,” said Scott Thompson, park director.
Thompson confirmed that a person or persons had drawn several swastikas on the stone steps. He was attempting to determine who had access to the site.
“I’m checking on some campers’ registrations which may have a youth or two that knows about this matter,” said Thompson.
Thompson planned to check around the park to determine if any other areas were affected.
A local photographer doing a photo shoot at the park said it was disturbing to find the symbols at such an otherwise beautiful location.
“It’s bad. Every single row of steps and almost every stone was marked with a swastika. I can’t believe someone covered those awesome steps with such,” said Samantha White, a Presque Isle photographer, in a Facebook post following her trip to the park.
