Caribou boys use late goal to deadlock Warriors

The Caribou Vikings scored a late goal to gain a tie against the defending Eastern Maine Class C champion Fort Kent Warriors Monday in Fort Kent. The Vikes, now 1-0-1, have a tough test Thursday when they play the Wildcats in Presque Isle at 7 p.m.

The Limestone-MSSM Eagles are still looking for their first win of the season and hope to do so Friday in Washburn. The Eagles lost at home to the Beavers Monday, 4-1.

Summaries of games played through Monday, Aug. 30 are as follows:

Caribou 1, Fort Kent 1 – The Vikings used a late goal by Ben Blackstone to gain a tie at Fort Kent Monday.

Blackstone’s goal came with 10:37 to play in regulation.

The Warriors had taken the lead late with 23 seconds left in the first half as Thomas Levesque connected on a shot.

Garrett Jordan of 1-0-1 Caribou saved six of 23 shots in goal, while Fort Kent’s Alex Charette turned away 11 of 23 Viking attempts.

Washburn 4, Limestone-MSSM 1 – Washburn’s Kyle Huston and Limestone-MSSM’s Brandon Nadeau traded first-half goals Monday in Limestone, but the Beavers outscored the Eagles 3-0 in the second half en route to the victory.

Mitch Worcester scored twice and Jordan McLaughlin once after intermission for Washburn, which improved to 5-1.

Zach Davis of Washburn had 10 saves on 11 shots and the Eagles’ Chris Bernier and Sean Gagnon combined to save 13 of 17 shots.

Easton 6, Limestone 2 – On Saturday in Easton, the Bears won for the first time behind two goals each from Jared Hafford and Holden Turner.

Jonah Bacon and Reid Clark were the team’s other goal scorers. Ian Sotomayor had an assist and goalie Cody Tompkins saved 14 of 19 shots.

For Limestone-MSSM, Josh Forsman had both goals. Bernier saved 14 of 28 shots.

Washburn 4, Ashland 1 – Also on Saturday, the visiting Beavers dominated at the start, scoring three times, two by McLaughlin, in the first 8:07 of the game to get past the Hornets in Presque Isle.

Worcester set up both goals and also netted his own off a Connor Fitzpatrick assist.

Kenny Tarr scored later in the first half for Ashland to make it 3-1, but the score remained that way until McLaughlin finished his hat trick with five minutes left in the game.

“We made some huge early mistakes,” said Ashland coach Kevin Paradis, “but this was another small improvement for us because after the first 10 minutes, it was a pretty good game.”

J.J. D’Ozier came up with 12 saves on 26 shots for the Hornets, while Davis saved four of 10 shots for Washburn.

Fort Fairfield 7, Ashland 2 – Last Wednesday in Presque Isle, Travis Noyes had five goals and also assisted on another to lead Fort Fairfield past Ashland.

Derek Dufour had a goal and an assist for the 2-2 winners and Colin Cassidy had the other goal. Goalie Chris Weeks made six saves on 14 shots.

Kenny Tarr scored both goals for winless Ashland. Alex Chasse had an assist and D’Ozier was busy with 16 saves on 30 shots.

Washburn 4, Van Buren 1 – McLaughlin logged another hat trick as his Beavers bested the Crusaders.

Worcester added a goal and two assists for the winners. Nick Bragg also had an assist. Davis made nine saves on 10 shots.
