Summer reading program well attended

This year, the Cary Library children’s summer reading program was “Explore the Mysteries of Water.”  The teen summer reading program made discoveries about the Meduxnekeag Watershed in “What’s in your Watershed?”     Jerry Schneider presented his program on “The Majesties of the Pond” and the children not only learned about aquatic life, but also had a blast creating their own T-shirts, said Librarian Linda Faucher. Several summer reading program participants toured the Houlton Water Company wastewater treatment plant and learned what happens to water once it leaves the faucet. They also walked to the Meduxnekeag River where Environmental Scientist/Aquatic Ecologist Angie Reed, provided information on local river ecology and hands-on instruction in identifying local insects in various stages of growth. The children received their own observation kits and had fun learning and examining the world of aquatic bugs.
For the 2010 summer reading program, the library continued the practice of providing a nutritional snack to each child for reading a book. As each child reached their halfway goal they received a Pizza Hut certificate. Everyone reaching their goal received a certificate of completion, another Pizza Hut certificate and a prize was given at the final party. Readers also participated in weekly drawings for pizza certificates, ice cream cone certificates, and a variety of prizes.
The final party for the children and teens was an attempt to allow more parents to participate with their children in helping them celebrate reaching their reading goal.
“All of our readers did an outstanding job reading,” said Faucher. “Two thousand ninety two books were read during the five-week summer program. The commitment by these readers and the support of their families is to be commended and we applaud them.”
Cary Library staff would like to extend their thanks to the many sponsors who helped make this program successful. The Rose & Samuel Rudman Library Trust provided the funds for the purchase of non-fiction books helping the library to update and expand their collection, and enabled Reed to provide the educational walk.
“Chris Carmichael of Pizza Hut continues to provide for our program with his generous donation of more than 250 personal pan pizza coupons,” said Faucher. Various donors made it possible for the staff to bring Jerry Schneider’s program to the library.
Faucher would also like to recognize and thank all the staff, including devoted volunteers Kenzie, Allison and Peggy, presenters and all the donors who helped make this summer’s program a huge success.
