The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Rotarian Sam Mahan was recognized for recently celebrating his 59th anniversary. Congratulations, Dawn and Sam.
The special speaker was Sarah Ashley, a geotechnical engineer with S. W. Cole. She attended school in Rhode Island before getting her masters in civil engineering at the University of Maine at Orono. She has worked for S. W. Cole for around 11 years and loves to play in the dirt. Her older brother used to put rocks in her Christmas stocking as a gag — but the joke was on him, because she loved them!
She has worked on various projects around the state — from a rail bed in Fort Kent to a remote mountain site in western Maine. There is lots of paperwork and reports that are part of her job, but she enjoys being able to work out-of-doors some of the time.
Sarah lives in Fort Kent with her husband Jared and 15-month-old daughter Piper.
On Sept. 5, following a summer of combined services, the United Methodist Churches in Mars Hill and Easton will resume their regular worship schedules, with Easton UMC meeting at 9 a.m. and Mars Hill UMC at 10:45 a.m.
Ray and Judy Mersereau continue to explore the northwestern U.S. and have enjoyed spending time in the area of Yellowstone National Park. They explored the park and saw Old Faithful, as well as many other geysers. They got caught up in traffic once when some buffalo decided they wanted the right-of-way! They spent two days visiting the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum and went whitewater rafting on the Red Canyon River.
They then traveled into Montana on the way to Glacier National Park, seeing many oil rigs along the way as well as a train of coal cars stretching as far as the eye could see. They enjoyed playing a round of golf at a course near the park. According to Ray, “A lot of fun, an easy course, good score.” Glacier National Park was impressive, with waterfalls, snowbanks and mountains. They went to Logan’s Pass, the main part of the pass on the Continental Divide. On a three-mile hike, Judy almost patted a mountain goat, getting within three feet of it. They also got some pictures of bighorn sheep.
The Rockies are spectacular, although their truck will forever have Judy’s fingerprints imbedded in the dash and door handles! Ray tells of hairpin turns, narrow roads and 1,000-foot drops. When driving on the outside of the mountain roads, Judy keeps her eyes straight ahead! No looking straight down for her!

RAY AND JUDY MERSEREAU, of Mars Hill, enjoy a hike at Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana. Note the photo date and the snow on the mountain to the right.

A MARS HILL COUPLE encountered a traffic tie-up in Yellowstone National Park recently. Ray and Jude Mersereau have been touring the country, now that Ray is retired — bet they're glad that moose don't run in herds like buffalo do!

THE YOUNGEST RIDER to take part in the Bobbi's Build An Ear Motorcycle Fund-raiser on Aug. 14 was 21-month-old Charlie Pierce, who was joined by her 3-year-old sister Julia and 5-year-old sister Frankie. They rode with their dad, Scott Pierce, who was the trail boss for the ride.

Motorcycles were all you could see for awhile in Mars Hill when around 125 bikes began their ride around The County on Saturday, Aug. 14, during the Bobbi’s Build An Ear fund-raiser. They rode 76 miles from Mars Hill, through Presque Isle and Caribou to Limestone and back through Fort Fairfield and Easton.
