To the editor:
We wish to thank everyone who contributed to make the Merrill Centennial weekend an extraordinary success! The play “Mother Goose Has Flown the Coop”, the Centennial Breakfast, the Quilt Show held at the Smyrna Merrill Historical Society were a tremendous success, and the Play will be held again due to popular request! We thank the Smyrna Merrill Historical Society, the play cast and everyone involved with the Quilt Show and the breakfast.
We thank everyone who worked on the Merrill Millstream Park for two years to prepare for this event and we give thanks to everyone who contributed — whether it was loam, gravel, equipment, labor or plants — we are thankful. We have a beautiful park that makes us all very proud to live in the community.
A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the Parade — it was a phenomenal success. Merrill has just 250 residents and we had over 70 floats from all over Aroostook County! I thank the ladies who helped organize the floats so that the parade started on time and the judges who had the difficult job of picking the winners!
A special thank you to Randy Rockwell for heading up the talent portion of the show — the audience was treated to a wide range of patriotic and gospel music — songs by Randy Rockwell, Bob Locke, Krista Nelson and Betty McGary.
The town and the Centennial Committee extend heartfelt gratitude to members of the Oakfield Fire Department and all other departments who participated in the Muster.
A prideful thank you to Chic Sissiote, state chair of the American Legion Blue Star Program was on hand to make more than a dozen awards to families of men and women serving in harms way. We are ever so grateful for the National Guard who supplied an activities trailer for the youth; we thank the North Country Cruisers for their involvement and the Furrow/Bustard crew who prepared the chicken barbecue. We are ever so grateful to Captain Merrill for his part in the celebration providing a bit of history and humor.
We extend a big thank you to the Craig Morse family for the Teddy Bear Drop from an airplane to the children. Many squeals of delight were heard from young and old alike. We thank Horace Russell for supplying extra teddy bears so all children would receive a bear.
We extend a special thank you to the Martinez family for providing an authentic Native American display and dance. We also thank those generous landowners who provided additional space for activities and parking.
The Centennial Committee dedicated the weekend to all Veterans as a show of the community’s gratefulness and the event ended with a Flag Folding Ceremony by MSgt. Robert Furrow and his son Daniel. We thank everyone who was involved, who gave and who came to enjoy!
