The high school soccer season opened up last Friday for Hodgdon, with the Lady Hawks falling to visiting Fort Fairfield 6-1.
Logan Bubar scored three goals to lift the 2-2 Lady Tigers to victory. Goalie Katie Donovan made eight saves.
For Hodgdon, McKenzie Palmer scored in the first half with an assist from her sister Macey Palmer. Goalie Kimberly Levesque rejected 11 shots.
In their second outing on Monday, the Lady Hawks were blanked 2-0 by host Limestone.
Levesque made 24 saves on 26 shots.
The Lady Eagles’ Amanda Allen hit an unassisted goal with 38 minutes left in the first half and Danielle Pelkey added the insurance goal. Goalie Autumn Beauchamp stopped nine of 10 shots.
At Houlton on Monday, the Lady Shires couldn’t find an answer to Nicole Cyr, who scored three times to lift the visiting Madawaska Owls to a 4-1 win over Houlton in each team’s opener.
Sam Nadeau scored another tally for the Owls, while goalie Amanda Nadeau turned back 11 of 16 shots.
For Houlton, Chelsi Murray scored the lone goal, assisted by Abby Kinens. Goalie Marina Cameron rejected nine of 15 shots faced.
The Houlton Shiretowners edged host Madawaska, 4-3, in double overtime to open their season.
The Shires had fallen behind 3-0 in the first half, but came up big in the second with goals from Micah Goetsch, Gary Fowler (assisted by Craig Thomas) and George Bessa to tie the game. Then, with just 1:57 left in the second overtime, Jimmy Fitzpatrick booted in the game-winner.
Houlton goalie Cody Briggs stopped 10 of 19 shots, while Madawaska’s netkeeper Tim Deschenes made 18 saves against 22 shots. The Owls slip to 1-2 on the season.
In the junior varsity game, Madawaska won 4-1.
Last Friday, the Southern Aroostook Warriors defeated host Easton, 4-3.
The Warriors took a 3-0 first-half lead on a goal by Jake Lassonde and two from Patrick Goodall. But, the Warriors allowed the Bears to come back, as “we became complacent in the second half,” said SACS coach Cliff Urquhart.
Easton scored two goals within a five-minute span to cut the lead to 3-2, but a goal by SACS’ Rob Rockwell put the Warriors ahead, 4-2 before Easton finished the scoring on a penalty kick with 1:32 left in the game.
