To the editor:
The article “Panel rules in favor of Caribou worker” published Aug. 13th in the Bangor Daily News says it all and solidifies my contention that these kind of jobs have no place in local governance and should be privatized. When this person was terminated the position should not have been filled until this case was settled and then the program should have been thrown off the cliff for total destruction.
As the story goes she’s done some freelance grant writing since she was terminated but has not yet found a job. Well, welcome to the real world of the private sector. Just continue to freelance and make your million. If the private sector isn’t working for this person and she’s looking for another job, what makes anyone think that the citizens of Caribou can afford this position in the first place. This department should be terminated immediately; then these so called grant writers could take a position to contract with the city on an as-needed basis.
If everything related to this case would have been properly documented and implemented this would have not gone to litigation. God only knows how much this is going to cost the city in kind and bad publicity. I hope that the city fathers learn something from this little escapade and stay away from setting up departments and programs that have nothing to do with city government so this will not come back to haunt us again.
