To the editor:
While recently having dinner with a friend that had moved to southern Maine, I asked what she had received from her former employer (the city of Caribou) for 25 years of service. I assumed she would say a watch, a clock or a bracelet, perhaps, but she answered a certificate. Gift certificate? No, just your ordinary thank you for 25 years of service certificate! To say that this riled me is an understatement. I was appalled and totally disgusted! That’s it? A certificate for giving 25 years of your life working for your city?
I know of people who have worked for the city for less years and received way more than that, so this reeks of personal agendas, petty politics and egos! Perhaps to the city, the timing wasn’t good for her leaving but it was right for her. Sorry, but circumstances and life situations do not adhere to anyone’s schedule; we do what is necessary based on what the situation dictates. The reasons for her moving were to be near her children and to assist her daughter, who has a debilitating illness. She helps her daughter get to local doctor appointments and also takes her to the ones in Boston. She takes care of her grandchildren on the days that her daughter just doesn’t have the energy or strength to do so. This is not a situation to be taken lightly, it is real and it is hard on all involved. Along with other issues in her personal life, this woman has a full plate, to say the least.
My dear friend, you may not have been recognized or rewarded for service and work ethic from the city but you will be greatly rewarded one day for putting your family and others ahead of self. You can be sure of that. Godspeed to you and your daughter, my friend and good luck on your new life’s journey.
