PI boys first, girls second in tournament

PRESQUE ISLE – The Caribou girls and the Presque Isle boys captured titles in the 18th annual PIHS Invitational Soccer Tournament, held Thursday and Saturday at the Johnson Athletic Complex.

The Caribou girls defeated Presque Isle 1-0 in a championship game decided by penalty kicks. The Vikings outscored the Wildcats in the penalty kicks stage, 4-3. This was a similar outcome to when the two teams met in the Eastern Maine Class B semifinals last October, with Caribou also winning on PKs.
Caribou went 3-1-2 in the round-robin portion of the tourney, while PI was 4-0-2. Caribou just edged out Fort Kent (2-0-4) in total points, 11-10, to make it into the finals. Madawaska (2-2-2), Houlton (2-3-1), Van Buren (2-3-1) and Ashland (0-5-1) also competed.
The Wildcat boys downed Caribou in the title game, 4-0. Presque Isle went 5-0-1 during the round robin, while Caribou was 3-1-2. Fort Kent also held a 3-1-2 mark, but were edged out in a tie-breaker.
Houlton (3-2-1), Madawaska (2-2-2), Ashland (1-5) and Van Buren (0-6) were the other teams involved in the tourney.
