100 Years Ago-August 17, 1910
Aroostook Times
Linneus — John Stewart, landlord of the Linneus House, has retired from the hotel business and has moved into a fine residence he has recently remodeled on the Houlton Road.
Houlton — Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Fogg, Mrs. E.G. Fisher and Mr. and Mrs. S. Friedman returned Sunday from an auto trip, having traveled 1,300 miles, going as far as the Hudson River and New York City and returning by way of the New England coast as far as Rockland to Bangor and home. During the entire trip they never met with a puncture or any trouble with their Model 17 Buick.
Visitor — Fred R. Houlton, a son of Joseph Houlton, one of the founders of the town bearing his name, accompanied by his daughter, Miss B.L. Houlton and a nephew, Frank Landler, all of Kirkwood, Ill., are visiting friends here for a few weeks.

Major Leaguers — Members of the Boston Braves traveled to Houlton for an exhibition game with the Houlton Area All-Star baseball team, winning 6-2 before an appreciative Shiretown crowd, estimated at 2,000.
New lights — The street lights on the Woodstock Road which formerly extended only as far as the East Hodgdon Road have been continued to the border and it is expected that the 20 odd new lights will be functioning by the last of the week. The traffic on the international highway at this point is heavy much of the time with the added activity at the airport.
Littleton — At the Grange meeting which was held Aug. 2, it was voted to accept $2 for an initiation fee until further notice and also allowed suspended members to be reinstated at the rate of 60 cents per year.
For Rent — All heated, janitor service, hot and cold water, electric stoves. Two rooms, kitchenette and bath, $25 per month; two rooms, large kitchenette and bath, $30 per month; three rooms, large kitchenette and bath, $40 per month. These formerly were $40 and $60 each. New Rec Director — Walter E. Burlock, 28 of Presque Isle has been named superintendent of the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department according to an announcement by Town Manager Robert E. Curtis. He is currently assistant director of recreation in Presque Isle.Houlton Pioneer Times File Photo
IRRIGATION PAYS OFF — Glen Manuel, left of Littleton, holds six good sized Katahdin potatoes taken from one irrigated hill of potatoes off his farm, while Robert Bartlett, also a Littleton farmer, holds nine under-sized potatoes dug from TWO hills of Katahdins that were not irrigated on the Manuel farm.
Cole’s Express — Cole’s Express and Houlton Truck Express have made application to the Maine Public Utilities Commission to transfer all of Houlton Truck Express’ common carrier authority.
In the movies — See yourself in the movies. Visitors and other spectators at Houlton’s Potato Feast in Market Square last month were filmed by B&A publicity director and amateur cameraman Richard Sprague for the Borderland Theatre with a 35 mm movie camera. The film has been processed and scheduled for a week’s run on the large screen at the outdoor theatre. The three-minute film captures the highlights of the potato feast and you may be seen in the movies. Lewis Webber, theatre owner said he plans to have other movies taken in the future.

Houlton — Dawn Degenhardt has been named Child Advocate of the Year by the North American Council on Adopted Children.
Alaska — Allen McFadden of Houlton and his son Glen of Searsport have returned home after spending 10 days at King Salmon, Alaska on a fishing trip sponsored by the Bangor Daily News.
East Hodgdon — Returning home from an Emery family reunion in the mountains of Colorado are Mr. and Mrs. Sam Fast and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Duff and family. Mrs. Fast’s mother and six brothers were all in attendance.
Sherman — Maitland J. Stevens has been appointed as the new member of the Farmers Home Administration Committee serving southern Aroostook and northern Penobscot counties.
