MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

The Haystack Historical Society wishes to thank all who stopped by our display at the Historical Pavilion at the Northern Maine Fair this year. Alice Shepard provided rug braiding demonstrations and the group had a display of one of the quilts from the Museum along with some of the Museum’s scrapbooks. The Society would like to remind everyone of the upcoming annual supper/auction event Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Haystack Historical Society in Mapleton. The supper will be served starting at 4:30 p.m. and will consist of homemade beans, ham, potato salad and desserts. Tickets for the supper are $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12. The auction will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. with Mapleton’s own Ron Leonard serving as auctioneer. This is the museum’s primary fund-raiser of the year and there will be a lot of great items to bid on.

Back to school

As many of you may know, today marks the end of summer vacation for students, faculty and staff at Presque Isle High School. Please remember to drive with caution as the buses will be out on the roads picking up students. Best wishes for a wonderful new year, and good luck to those ninth-graders entering the school as first-year students!

Riding the wave

The West Chapman Advent Christian Church concluded a successful week of Vacation Bible School with a closing program Friday, Aug. 13. During the daily schedule, nearly 30 children opened each evening with the American flag salute, Christian flag salute, and Bible salute, followed by a prayer. Entertaining the children each evening were the stars of the week, special puppet visitors “Pinky,” the flamingo and “Flipper,” the dolphin. Pinky and Flipper were one of the many highlights of VBS! According to organizers, the children loved this part and the younger children always waited anxiously to see where Pinky and Flipper lived. Special thanks to Joye and Maynard Buck for sharing their faith, sense of humor and love for children!
Bible time featured stories focused on how to “ride the wave of God’s love.” The daily stories not only included a Biblical message, but sometimes included water as a prop! Stories taught by the volunteers included the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, Jesus calming the storm, Elijah challenging the prophets of Baal, the story of the fishermen when Jesus told them to put down their nets on the other side of the boat, and Paul becoming shipwrecked. At some points during the stories, children found themselves unexpectedly “misted!”
Snack time was also a highly anticipated time each evening. Coordinators created snacks around the story of the day. Children enjoyed “flaming sticks” (pretzel rods dipped in chocolate), “Red Sea Crossing” (Jell-O jigglers with chocolate, graham crackers and Teddy Grahams), “Banana Split boats” (bananas, whipped cream, and cherries), “Fish on the Beach” (vanilla pudding, banana slices with gummy fish on top) and “Net full of fish” (goldfish crackers in tulle netting).
One of the favorite games of the week was a water balloon relay, which ended in a water balloon fight! Many days the children returned to indoor activities completely soaked from enjoying the warm weather activities! Continuing with the “water” theme, daily crafts included a “wave” picture frame, fishing pole memory verse holder, and an anchor note board.
During the closing program, the children performed for their families, singing several songs they learned during the week, along with fun hand motions, including the theme song, “Splish Splash, Bible Bash.” The top four children that attended each of the five days and memorized their memory verses were named and allowed to choose from numerous “water themed” prizes. By the end of the evening, each child left with a floral lei around their neck, a special water-themed prize, a handmade fish made of recycled CDs, their bag of crafts, a song in their heart and many special memories that will undoubtedly last and last! Organizers are looking forward to next year with ideas already “in the works!”
