Mary and Neil Baker, of Washburn, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, joined by many loved ones during a party for the couple in Washburn.

Mary and Neil Baker were married on June 11, 1960, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 5, 2010, with family and friends at the Washburn Snowmobile Club.
Their three children now have families of their own and include daughter Jackie (Baker) Wadsworth who is married to Robert Wadsworth. Jackie has four children: April White of Union; Robert Kapuscinski of Bremen; Carrie Kapuscinski of Fleetwood, Penn.; and Cathryn Kapuscinski of Woodland. Jackie has three step-grandchildren by her step-daughter Morgan Wadsworth: Damon, Dominic and Gabriella.
Their daughter Karen (Baker) Hatt is married to Alex Hatt and they have one son, Blake, who is married to Sarah.
The Bakers have one son, Neil Baker Jr., who is married to Tracy and they have two children, Megan and Brett.
The couple enjoyed a wonderful celebration with family and friends. Their children and friends sent invitations, provided wonderful refreshments and had a beautiful cake decorated with a photo from their dating days! Entertainment was provided by Wendell Hudson with singing and guitar music which Mary and Neil enjoyed very much!
Among the many guests (some of Mary and Neil’s siblings attended: included: Raymond and Monika Baker, Gloria Drost, Patricia Baker, Barbara Drost, Ethel and Albert Doody, Lela Bickford, Chum Richardson and Pauline Beaulier.
Mary and Neil received several very nice gifts and cards, and their family would like to thank everyone who participated and attended the party, which was a wonderful occasion to celebrate their milestone and gather the family together.

Wade selectmen meet

Selectmen Donna Turner, Nelson Ketch and Chairman Freeman Corey met recently, and included in the agenda were reports on road ditching and shimming efforts, some new culverts and some tar patching. The roads being worked on include the South Wade, New Dunntown and Gardner Creek.
The selectmen reviewed applications for the treasurer/tax collector position and plan to hire before the end of the month at which time new office hours will be set and the office opened to the public.
The mil rate for Wade was able to be lowered due to a re-evaluation, but due to the loss in revenue sharing, Homestead Exemptions and municipal funds and an increase in educational costs, the lower mil rate will not result in a significant change in taxes.
The town garage is scheduled for some much-needed repairs including insulating, siding and painting. The selectmen note that there is someone interested in purchasing the old grader for scrap material. Useable parts will be salvaged off it before it is scrapped.
The town of Wade is still in need of forming a cemetery committee, and town records are currently stored in various locations, and a plan to centralize the records in the new town office is in the works.

School starts soon

WDHS and WDES schools begin on  Tuesday,  Aug. 17. Teachers will have a workshop on Monday, Aug. 16.

CHURCH ANNIVERSARY — This is an earlier photo of the current Crouseville Advent Christian Church located on Main Street. The church will mark its 150th anniversary this weekend.

In 1860, the first “Christian Church” was organized and met in a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of the Cross Road. A notable series of meetings was led by “Aunt Abbie Wood” and in 1885, a church building and parsonage was erected. In 1896, the church was reorganized under the name of Second Advent Christian Church prior to its current name of Crouseville Advent Christian Church, with a new structure being built on Main Street. There was a prayer band revival from 1911 to 1914 with so many converts, the village of Crouseville was known as “The Holy City.”
In 1915, Fred and Avis Flewelling were the first to be married at the church. In 1920 a “fine horse shed” was added and, in 1932, the Mission Building was built as a kitchen, dining room and meeting place for all mission activities.
There were complete renovations in 1947 with a new front entrance and bell tower added, and the Ethel Burtt Memorial Youth Center was built. Many more additions have been made over the years, and this month, on Aug. 18-22, there will be a grand celebration of the 150th anniversary of the church.
Events include a special prayer meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. — an enjoyable hymn sing with special speaker Greg Moody, president of Maine State Conference of Advent Christian churches. On Saturday, Aug. 21, there will be a service to honor pastors, both past and present, starting at 6 p.m. The speakers will be: the Reverend Clint Taber, eastern regional superintendent; former pastors Reverend Richard Russell, Reverend George Woodward, Reverend John Walsh and James White, the son of Reverend Melvin White.
A special historical book has been compiled and will be on display at the church each day and evening during services. This booklet is complete with a wide array of photos as well as letters from former pastors unable to attend.
On Sunday there will be the regular morning service at 9:30 a.m., a cookout at noon and an afternoon service at 2:30 p.m. During both the morning at afternoon services, the church choir will be providing some very special music. The entire weekend will be a chance for members, former members and families to come and exchange many special memories and renew old acquaintances.
