ImagePeter Arden Bull, died peacefully August 13, 2010, at his home in Brookfield, Mass, his beloved wife Mary at his side. He was born on October 7, 1937, in Washburn, the second son and child of Arden and Edith Bull.
He was a plain-spoken man who was as American as Huckleberry Finn and just as frank and colorful. One could not easily forget the tall, lanky man with the deep voice, sharp wit and no-nonsense manner. He was a loving, kind and tender man who enjoyed the simple joys of life, family gatherings, open country reminiscent of his youth in northern Maine, farm memorabilia, antiques and homemade bread. As a young man, he helped out on the farm and in the family gravel business, graduated in 1955 from Washburn H.S., then enlisted in the Army serving from 1955-1959, which included an extended period stationed in Germany. While in Europe, Peter traveled to Norway, his mother’s birthplace, bringing back photos and stories of her home place. Returning home from serving his country, he worked with his brother Lief in the Allagash woods.
Peter was unabashedly sentimental about his farm roots, which must have led him to a job he loved and kept for 43 years, delivering animal feed for Central Connecticut Co-op of Manchester, to farm customers in New England, NY & PA. Later he partnered with his wife Mary in Desy-Bull Milk Transport for 17 years in central Mass. During the long days on the road away from his family, these two jobs kept him connected to country ways and interests. Peter’s nostalgia for farms also resulted in his collections of John Deere tractors, vintage milk bottles, jack knives and yard sticks. Like a salmon returning to his spawning grounds, Peter kept trying to get back to northern Maine. In the recent past, he and his wife bought a house with barn in his hometown. Soon Peter had the white barn painted red and proudly affixed a sign with a John Deere tractor sketch which said: ‘The Peter and Mary Bull Homestead, Washburn, Maine’. Happily, Peter and Mary did get to spend some time in their Washburn home. The highlight of Peter’s year would be driving his John Deere in the Washburn Festival Parade and gathering with old friends at the Alumni Pot Luck.
Two years ago, Peter and Mary fulfilled a life dream of traveling to and seeing Alaska. To do this, they purchased a motor home, and embarked upon an adventure-filled summer and fall, seeing many wonders along the way.
Peter was a trusted friend, a dear sibling, a wonderful and supportive husband, dedicated father, devoted worker and a person of countless kindnesses to friends, family & strangers.
He will be deeply, sadly missed by his wife, Mary Desy Bull; & family: his children & their families, Toren & Terri Bull, Zayne Bull & companion Karen Currier, Shawn & Rachel Bull all of Vernon, CT, Darcie Bull & partner Laura Gallapis of Denver, NC, and Scott Damron of FL; his twelve siblings & their families, Lief V.     Peter was pre-deceased by his parents, Arden and Edith Bull; and nieces, Ingrid Erin Ellis and Martha Kristina Morrison.
