PRESQUE ISLE – Patricia Donovan, 16, daughter of Harry and Candace Donovan of Blaine, produced the Grand Champion in her first year of showing at this year’s 4-H Baby Beef Show and Auction held at the Northern Maine Fair & Music Festival. Donovan was mentored by Bruce and Lauri Buck of Mapleton, leaders of the Aroostook Valley 4-H Baby Beef Club. The Bucks introduced the Nutrena “Northeast Beef Textured” feed to the Donovan family.
“Early on in the barn check process, the Nutrena fed calves were clearly gaining faster,” said Donovan.
“Nutrena has very tight quality control and the results prove it,” said MPG’s Nutrena Feed Specialist Barry Flood.
MPG provides a quality product line and product expertise for all animals, technical support, product workshops, and specials throughout the year.
To promote the Nutrena brand, MPG implemented a program reimbursing a Nutrena fed Grand Champion. As winner of the baby beef competition, the Donovans will be refunded by MPG for the Nutrena feed purchased at MPG to raise the beef up to $1,000. In addition, all baby beef program participants receive $1 off per bag of Nutrena feed purchased at MPG. MPG plans to continue this program and partnership with the Aroostook Valley 4-H Baby Beef Club.
Donovan’s prize steer, Chip, weighed in at 1,375 pounds and sold for $4 per pound. Donovan will be showing a Nutrena fed Heifer at the upcoming “Big E,” Eastern States Exhibition, as a member of the Maine State Team.
A full range of the Nutrena product line is available at both MPG locations – 12 Grange St. in Houlton and 56 Parsons St. in Presque Isle. For more information about Maine Potato Growers, Inc., log onto www.mpgco-op.com.
