Tourney benefits Shaw scholarship

A 1996 Presque Isle High School graduate who now lives in Massachusetts has established a non-profit foundation in her late father’s memory and has earmarked proceeds from an upcoming golf tournament to create an annual scholarship at their alma mater.

Image    Tiffany Shaw-Bindoo, with help from family and friends, has organized a charity golf tournament at Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield on Saturday, Aug. 21. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Allan R. Shaw Memorial Foundation and, in 2011, a PIHS scholarship.
“My husband (Carl) and I started this foundation to honor the memory of my father. My father was hard working, compassionate and generous; traits he and my mother instilled in my brother and me by example,” said Shaw-Bindoo, a 2000 civil engineering graduate of the University of Maine who works as a project manager in the town of Needham’s Construction Department.
Allan R. Shaw was born on Nov. 17, 1952 and died in June of 1998. He graduated from PIHS Class of 1971. With his mother, brothers and sisters he ran two family businesses; a farm and a construction company. He grew potatoes and grain and even tried flax for a season believing it would be a viable crop in the future. The construction company focused mainly on steel buildings like potato houses but they also built houses, including most of the original houses on University Street, the Forum, KFC and Burger King, according to Shaw-Bindoo.
“My father loved high school sports. He was a big fan of basketball and we would travel to Bangor every year with all of the Shaw family for the basketball tournament. He would have been so proud of my cousins Adam and Dillon Kingsbury and the success they had on the PIHS team. He was also a big hockey fan and was a big supporter of the team when it first started,” Shaw-Bindoo said.
The inaugural Allan R. Shaw Memorial Charity Golf Tournament, which features a scramble format with male, female or mixed four-person teams, begins with registration at 10:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at noon. Prizes will be awarded for the winning team, the longest drive, closest to the pin (male and female) and hole in one. Tee times and hole sponsorships are still available for the tournament. Sponsors to date include Porter Farms, the Willette Family and Maine Farmers Exchange.
The event will be followed by a 5 p.m. social hour and dinner in the AVCC clubhouse. The $50 entry fee includes golf, cart and dinner per person. Dinner only is available at $20 per person.
Shaw-Bindoo said the fund-raiser will also feature raffle prizes including Red Sox tickets, a Nike driver, a Skycaddie SG4 rangefinder and many others. All donations are tax deductible.
“My husband and I have played golf together since our second date. It is an activity we enjoy together and anticipate sharing with our family in the future. We chose a golf tournament as our fund-raising vehicle because it is an activity that the entire family can participate in and although my father was not a golfer he did cherish his family and friends above all else,” Shaw-Bindoo said.
Registration forms are available at Ray’s Corner Variety, 70 Academy St., Presque Isle or send a check payable to: The Allan R. Shaw Memorial Foundation, Inc. at 175 Walnut Street, Dedham, MA 02026. Registration should include contact information (including e-mail if available) and whether the golfer is signing up as an individual to be placed on a team by the organizers or as part of an established team.
