Mailbox vandals sought
By Kathy McCarty
PRESQUE ISLE — Local police continue to investigate several reports of mailbox vandalism that occurred over the past couple weeks.
The Presque Isle Police Department continued to receive reports of mailboxes damaged on rural roads, following last week’s report of incidents happening from the Parsons and Chapman roads on the western side of the city to Route 10 and the Centerline Road to the east.
The person or persons responsible face a stiff fine and possible jail time, if found guilty.
“It’s considered criminal mischief, under state law, when one destroys another’s property. It’s a Class D crime. If found guilty, the party faces a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 364 days in jail (for each incident),” said Deputy District Attorney Carrie Linthicum.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact 764-4476.
The U.S. Postal Service also has a website to report incidents involving mailboxes: http://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/forms/MLNtRcvd.aspx.
