Historical group has busy summer

Members of the Caribou Historical Society recently hosted the board of directors of the Caribou Rotary Club at a breakfast held at the museum.

The hearty menu of beans, pancakes, has browns, scrambled eggs and orange juice was prepared by Bud Brewer and served by other members of the historical society.

Following the morning meal Rotary directors worked on upcoming activities then had a chance to peruse the museum. Many noted they had never been inside the Lyndon School which houses several old student desks, rules for teachers of earlier times and the school bell that actually rings.

The Caribou Historical Society members enjoyed hosting the Rotary directors and offer their appreciation for having breakfast at the museum.

Ready to ‘Build a barn’

At a recent meeting of the Caribou Historical Society it was noted that the group had received a tremendous response to their “Save the Wagon” campaign.

According to Joe Bouchard, president of the society, “Our thanks go out to the many people who responded to our request for donations. At this time we feel sure that funds will go over the top and we will commence the building of our barn within the next two months.”

“We look forward to being able to cover the Conestoga Wagon, the same wagon that traveled 24 days from Boston to Caribou in 1959 in celebration of Caribou’s Bicentennial events,” stated Bouchard. “We will finally be able to house many of the items that people have so graciously donated to the Caribou Historical Society and the Whittier Museum,” he added.

During the meeting the group addressed other issues including the need to paint the railings at the museum and to re-do the signs in a way that are more specific in the hours of operation. Other discussions were directed toward establishing committees, the possibility of having a short program at each meeting; creating periodic displays and displaying the Conestoga Wagon at the Northern Maine Fair.

Members of the Caribou Historical Society are extremely enthused about their barn project coming closer to a reality and remind all interested individuals that everyone is welcome to attend their meetings and become a part of Caribou’s history.
