AFSL and Fort fall in Pony semis

PRESQUE ISLE – The Aroostook County Pony League championship tournament was held Friday, with Madawaska coming away with the title with a 13-1 win over the Wildcats of Presque Isle.

Limestone defeated Ashland and went on to compete against Presque Isle in the champioship game, losing 7-1.

Madawaska’s offense was led by Ian Lee, who had two singles and a triple. Winning pitcher Sam Beaulieu belted a two-run home run and a single to help his own cause.

 

Presque Isle’s Jacob Player and Andrew Patterson combined to strike out nine batters. Tyler Seeley and Scott Rynold had the lone Wildcat hits.

In one semifinal game played earlier in the day, Madawaska defeated Fort Fairfield, 13-4. Pitching a complete game in the victory was Corey Nadeau, who struck out 12.

Pitching for Fort Fairfield was Austin Bernier, who went the distance, striking out 10 batters and allowing 10 hits.

Leading the offense for Fort Fairfield were Zach Argraves with two singles. Landon Keizer, Austin Bixler, and Andrew Tuck all had singles and Carl Smith doubled.

The other semifinal game had Presque Isle’s Wildcats defeating Aroostook County Federal Savings and Loan of Caribou, 8-0.

Wildcat pitchers Player, Patterson and Josh Gordon combined to strike out 16 batters, while only allowing four hits in the shutout.

Making a key defensive play for Presque Isle was David Cyr, who made a nice catch on a fly ball to rob Reggie Rideout of Caribou of an extra base hit in the second inning.             Caribou was led by Dayne Savage, Kyle Wickstrom, and Rideout, who all had singles, and Dylan Greenier with a double.

Pitching the complete game for Caribou was Devin Berkoski, who struck out eight batters and allowed seven hits.

Madawaska had beaten AFSL in extra innings in last Wednesday’s northern division final.
