Houlton — Frank Burton, candy maker for John A. Millar, has purchased a candy and ice-cream business in Millinocket and expects to move there to take possession.
Ricker Classical Institute — Prof. Warren Carter of last year’s faculty has sent his resignation to accept a more lucrative position with an electrical company in Boston.
Hodgdon — The barn of H.H. Quint was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm last week. A fire was started, but was extinguished.
75 Years Ago-August 1, 1935

Firemen injured — Dana Nickerson and Guilford Colbath, members of the Houlton Fire Department required medical treatment for injuries sustained when the department was called out to two very destructive fires almost within an hour. Both received their injuries during the first fire, which broke out at 11:33 a.m. in the house on the Foxcroft Road owned by Herman Brewer. Bricks from the chimney fell and struck Mr. Nickerson injuring his shoulder and leg. A spike in a piece of falling timber pierced the shoulder of Mr. Colbath. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Foster and 10 children occupied the house. The department was again called out at 12:45 p.m. to a blaze that totally destroyed a house, shed, henhouse and two barns owned by William Riley of Houlton, located on the B Road. Mr. and Mrs. John O’Donnell and 10 children occupied this home.

Population — Preliminary U.S. Census Bureau figures just released show the southern Aroostook area registered a population loss of 2,883 in the past 10 years.
Meets Vice President — Miss Helen Mitchell of Houlton met Vice President Richard M. Nixon at the 1960 Republican National Convention. Miss Mitchell is the National G.O.P. committeewoman from Maine. It was also reported that Chauncey Robbins, former State Senator from Aroostook met President Dwight D. LENDING A HAND — Pupils of the sixth grade at the Central School recently contributed funds and purchased toilet articles and other sundries for packaging and shipment abroad. Shown in the photo presenting boxes on behalf of their classmates to Mrs. Donald Edwards, Junior Red Cross Chairman are from left, Janet White, Jane Webb, Tim McCormack and Dick York.
Water skiing contest — Houlton entered three contestants in the water skiing contest at Fort Fairfield during the Maine Potato Blossom Festival and the three water enthusiasts finished first, second and third. Bob Somerville was first, Bobby Ellis was second and Dave Peabody, third.

Pony Club — Carolyn Denton and her registered Connamera pony, Scimian, completed on the cross-country phase of the horse trial at the Groton Horse Farm in Hamilton, Mass. Carolyn placed fifth in the junior division.
Houlton Grange — The Houlton Grange conferred the first and second degrees on Ralph and Bernice Nickerson.
Pageant finalist — Melissa Drouin, daughter of Ray and Sheila Drouin of Holton placed second in a field of 23 young ladies from Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont in the Miss New England American Co-ed Pageant held in Massachusetts.
New officers — The Houlton Lions Club elected new officers. Leading the club will be, President, Donald Swenson; Secretary/Treasurer, David C. Gates; First Vice President, Raymond Dow; and Second Vice President, Ed Cleary.
