HOULTON — Sandra Newman, author of the book, Life and Times on Pleasant Pond, will visit the Cary Library from 5:30 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5.
An excerpt from the book follows:
“This beautiful outdoor recreation area in northern Maine has long been noted for its picturesque towns and beautiful natural scenery. Aroostook County is a sports lover’s paradise in all seasons, with an abundance of magnificent places for skiing, hiking, hunting, boating, fishing, and swimming.
“President Theodore Roosevelt discovered Island Falls in 1878 and enjoyed many visits to the hunting camp of his lifelong friend, William Sewall. The woodland areas of Aroostook County were preserved through the efforts of Teddy Roosevelt and Maine’s Governor Llewellyn Powers. Travel back through history to discover the perpetual tranquility of the pond that everyone holds so dear. The history and beauty of Pleasant Pond is conveyed through the words of Sandra Newman and the stories contributed by other “pond people” who live or vacation at this magical place. This enchanting book chronicles the lives of families who settled in Maine’s northernmost county, Aroostook, and set up homes around one of the area’s most treasured bodies of water.”
