Haystack Historical Society Museum

open for visitors

MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

The Haystack Historical Society Museum is now operating on its summer hours. The museum is open for visitors every Saturday during the months of July and August from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There is no better way to spend a couple of hours (especially on a rainy day) than to stop by our local Historical Society Museum. If you have children or grandchildren, the summer is a great time to introduce them to the way of life generations before them once knew. They can view a typical classroom, farm equipment, tools, furniture, clothing, household items, Girl Scout memorabilia, and so much more all from years gone by. With all the talk about a summer “staycation,” I recommend including the Haystack Historical Society Museum on your list of places to visit!

Chapman Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club news

The snowmobile and ATV club would like to thank all of those who participated in the silent auction and those who attended our Gloria McPherson Memorial Breakfast during the Mapleton Daze weekend. All funds will be used to fund our new clubhouse. A big “thank you” also goes to those members and area businesses that donated to the auction. Stop by the new clubhouse and check out the progress! Remember, those who have been members for at least one year will receive a discount on the rental of the new building. Look for other fund-raisers in the fall.

Free swim

Although summer recreation activities sponsored by our towns are now over for the season, the outdoor pool will remain open until Aug. 15. There will be free swim from 1-3:45 p.m. and from 5-7:45 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. The pool will be closed on Sundays, but is available for rent for private parties; please contact the Town Office for more details. Lifeguards on duty during free swim will be enforcing scheduled breaks at 45 minutes past the hour each hour for 15 minutes. Don’t stay at home when it’s hot; go cool off at our local pool!

Successful VBS

The Mapleton Baptist Church sponsored a very successful Vacation Bible School this past week. Fifty-four children ages 4-10 participated in the weeklong sessions. For two-and-a-half hours each day, children learned songs, made crafts, had Bible study time, played games, enjoyed snacks and made their very own video all surrounding a “fishers of men” theme. Josh and Melanie Duncan of Massachusetts, formerly from the area, once again returned “home” to lead the fun-filled week.
Children collected an offering daily to raise money for what the Rev. Ken Phelps dubbed, “Kids for Kids in Haiti.” According to Phelps, the goal was to collect $50, enough to purchase one goat for a family in the country still recovering from a devastating earthquake in January. Families raise goats and once the time is right, the animals are sold so parents will have enough money to send their children to school. Public education is not free in Haiti and the sale of one goat would send one child to school for one semester. Excitingly enough, through the generosity of the children and their families in our communities, nearly $300 was raised to benefit families so desperate for financial assistance.
During the closing program held Friday afternoon, children had the opportunity to share with their families some of the exciting aspects of their week. They sang a song, each received a participation certificate and bag of “goodies,” and the top four children in each of the three age groups were awarded special prizes for achieving the most points. During the week, children earned points for their attendance, bringing their Bible with them each day, bringing a friend with them, and for memorizing memory verses. One young lady in the oldest age group was presented an award for learning all 27 verses!
The week was so successful, thanks to the numerous volunteers, including several middle school students. The program ended with the viewing of the highly anticipated music video featuring all of the children that attended throughout the week.
The Mapleton Baptist Church has Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. and morning worship service at 10:45 a.m. every Sunday. Starting in September, Director of Youth Ministries Isaac Ashby, will be meeting with area children twice a month. Any local children in grades 3 through middle school are invited to attend.

Mapleton Lions Club

The Mapleton Lions Club ended its year on the success of the Mapleton Lions Chicken BBQ and its food sales at the Maple Meadow Farm Festival. Both of these events occurred on the Mapleton Daze weekend at the end of June. As part of the weekend, an exciting club raffle of his and her bicycles was won by Harold and Francine Soucy. The club thanks MOJO’s for donating the bicycles and their professional setups to make this fund-raising effort a success. The funds from this effort will be used to support Mapleton Lions Club charities.
Also the club added a new member, Bob McBay, who with his wife, Darcy, are the new owners of the Mapleton Diner. Lion Lloyd Archer sponsored Bob’s membership in the club. Lion Bob immediately stepped up and assumed the position of Expert Salad Chef for the Lions Club’s chicken barbecue. He and Darcy spent several evenings preparing the delicious coleslaw enjoyed by 500 folks attending the club’s chicken barbecue at Mapleton Daze. The club thanks both of them for this effort.

Collection box

Mapleton Boy Scouts Pack 170 has placed a collection box to benefit the Central Aroostook Humane Society at the Town Office. This was established to assist the Tiger Cubs as they completed some of the requirements to move up to the Wolf Den. Items needed include cat litter, litter box bags, cat and dog food, paper towels, pet toys and treats, newspapers (what a great way to recycle old copies of The Star-Herald!), towels (new or used), bleach, laundry detergent, and pet beds. The box will be at the Town Office for an extended period of time. Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated!

Mapleton United Methodist Church luncheon

The United Methodist Church will be hosting its weekly luncheon Friday, July 30 at 11:30 a.m. There is no charge for the luncheon, but donations are accepted. All are welcome to attend.
