Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, July 20, at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Roland Perry, the new golf pro at the Mars Hill Country Club. He started as a caddy at the Old Orchard Beach Country Club before attending the John Jacobs School of Golf. After spending some time in Arizona, he returned to Maine for the summers. He enjoys woodworking and magic, which he sometimes uses to help keep the kids focused.
He currently has nine kids in his golf clinic, which includes four sessions. Ages 5 through 8 have one-hour lessons, ages 9 to 13 have one-and-a-half-hour lessons. He uses special clubs to teach kids the proper hand and swing techniques. He is planning on doing another clinic soon. For more information, contact Roland at 425-4802.

At right, celebrated their 50th reunion from Thursday through Saturday, July 22-24. The group enjoyed many gatherings and tours. Pictured are, in front, from left: Bob Anderson, Marie (Bates) Madore, Donna (Burlock) Brown, Janice Lee (Boyd) Hallett, Bonnie (Boulier) Clayton and Gary Dyer. In the back two rows, from the left, are: Brian Grass, Larry Weeks, Wayne Garrison, Ray Mersereau, Melvin Mazer, Bonnie Blanchard, Donald Quigley, Mary (Cook) Somerville, Celesta (Watterson) Wilson, Nancy (Graves) Gerow, Richard Watson, John Griffin, Keith Watson, Raymond Kingsbury, Brenda (Ryder) Hathaway, Fred Tapley and Ernest Hathaway. One special “The Rest of the Story” revelation was about a drag race challenge issued by Ray Mersereau and Ernest Hathaway against Melvin Mazer and Don Quigley. Ray and Ernest headed up the Fort Road with enough of a lead to be able to pull over and hide behind the old starch factory. They watched Melvin race by, and then took their time and enjoyed driving past Melvin and the cop who had pulled him over, waving as they drove by! Melvin went before the judge, who took his license for a week. Melvin told him that “that was OK, as his father had taken it for a month!” Melvin and Donald didn’t know until this reunion that Ernest and Ray had pulled over.

Ron Gallop, commander of the Mars Hill American Legion Post, welcomed Donald Beattie on July 3 following the parade. Donald spoke of the July 4, 1960, raising of the flag on top of Mars Hill Mountain. It was the first 50-star flag raised on that day. There were many individuals that attended the flag raising, including Governor Reed. There was also a mile-long parade that day that featured six or seven marching bands, among many others entries. The flagpole that stood on top of the mountain that day is the one that is in front of the Mars Hill Legion. Pictured at the right, from left are: Beattie and Gallop.
