Minor League baseball
To begin week 5 of Minor League baseball at the pool field, Katahdin Trust lost to a Saving Bank team that was red hot at the plate. SB’s full lineup included Bailey York, Brandon McKnight, Adam Patterson, Eric Tompkins, Nagoozet Morey, Connolly Ambrutis, Cole Patterson, Zachariah Morse (from Katahdin Trust) and Jake Stevens. Each player reached base once in this 5-inning game, and only McKnight, A. Patterson and Tompkins were short of scoring, though each of those three had an RBI. Eric Tompkins, Bailey York, Brandon McKnight, and Jake Stevens combined for a no-hitter, allowing just one run off a bases-loaded walk to RJ Gross, his third of the game. Garret Morneault came in to score, while Rylee Albert and Kyler Caron each advanced after their second walks in the game.
SB pitching had 14 strikeouts combined, with the only other out coming from Katahdin Trust’s own player Zachariah Morse at first base who showed good sportsmanship by playing for a short-handed SB.
Saving Bank won this early morning division contest 9-1.
In an intense pitchers’ duel between Griffin Guerrette and Jaren Winger for Key Bank and Jonah Hudson for K of C, 31 out of 36 total outs in the game were strikeouts. Jaren Winger wasn’t one of those statistics, going 3 for 3 with a double and two singles. Griffin Guerrette added to Key Banks’ four runs with a triple and double. Jonah Hudson cranked a double, and Torey Levesque scored off of his own bunt single to be the lone two hits against Guerrette seven K’s and Winger’s nine K’s.
On the defensive end, Jonah Hudson allowed only five hits to none other than Guerrette and Winger, and had 15 out of 18 outs himself in strikeouts. Andrew Hewitt, Mason and Gage Young, Carter Trombley, and Karston Borgoin were positive supporters of Hudson in the field, getting the other three outs and allowing Key Bank only four runs.
For Key Bank, the defense of Matthew O’Connell, Drew Cameron, Keegan Kinney, Trevor Miranda, Isaac Madore and Iffy Sargent only allowed two runs for K of C to help Key Bank win its sixth straight game, 4-2.
To start last Wednesday’s Minor League round robin tournament, K of C hosted Savings Bank and won 7-2. Max Bartley led Savings Bank’s offensive effort, finishing 2 or 2 with a run scored and RBI. Jake Stevens did the same with one RBI, and Trace Cyr, Bailey York, Nagoozet Morey and Adam Patterson all hit singles despite a solid K of C infield, including Andrew Hewitt, William Bridges, Jonah Hudson, Carter Trombley and Mason Young.
K of C’s outfield, consisting of Gage Young, Brody Gallagher-Easler and Chase Quiron allowed no extra-base hits for Savings Bank. Torey Levesque, Jonah Hudson, Andrew Hewitt and Carter Trombley each had two singles; Andrew Hewitt scored both times he reached, and Levesque, Hudson, Trombley, Bourgoine, G. Young, M. Young, Gallaher-Easler, Quiron, and Franz all either scored or reached base for K of C – a full team effort.
Savings Bank’s Max Barley had seven putouts, receiving throws from Jake Stevens, Bailey York, Jack Bonville, Trace Cyr, Nagoozet Morey, Brandon McKnight, Cole and Adam Patterson in the 7-2 loss.
In the round robin’s second game, Katahdin Trust lost to Key Bank 7-3 after letting a 3-3 tie in the third inning slip. Jacob Sjoberg proved to be a great leadoff batter for KT, going 1 for 3 and putting the ball in play all three at bats, forcing Key Bank’s infield of Jack Beaulieu, Jaren Winger, Drew Cameron and Trevor Miranda into making defensive plays. Kyler Caron hit a double to re-spark KT’s offense in the last inning, but RJ Gross’s two singles, Jared Kilcollins and Rylee Albert’s singles came an inning too early for KT to get a rally started in the fifth. Caron, Albert, and Sjoberg scored for KT in their 3-run effort.
For Key Bank, Griffin Guerrette also showed great lead-off work, batting 3-4 with two doubles and scoring every time he reached. Jack Beaulieu stayed consistent by reaching third base after hitting a single and getting an RBI in his three at bats. Jaren Winger had a double and a single, along with Matthew O’Connell, Alex Churchill, Isaac Madore and Keegan Kinney each had a single of their own.
Zachariah Morse, Garrett Morneault, Noah Race and Elijah Ruiz were hustling all over the outfield in their loss to Key Bank.
In the third game of the round robin, Savings Bank was the host of a still undefeated Key Bank team. For Key Bank, second slot hitter Jack Beaulieu came around Drew Cameron in the first. Griffin Guerrette’s RBI single in the second inning brought Isaac Madore around, who led it off with a single. A lead-off triple by Jaren Winger in the third gave them another run thanks to another single by Drew Cameron. Alex Churchill also singled in the third. Griffin Guerrette finished his 2 for 3 day with a double and eventually scoring because of Jaren Winger’s RBI single.
Lights out ‘D’ by Savings Bank in the fifth stifled Key Bank’s offense. For Savings Bank’s offense, Adam Paterson put the ball in play all three at bats. Jake Stevens scored in the first off an Erick Tompkins single. Tompkins had both RBIs for Savings Bank. Key Bank came away with the 4-2 win.
The final game saw Katahdin Trust coming away with the 6-4 win over K of C. Jacob Sjoberg led Katahdin Trust with two hits and a run from the leadoff spot in the batting order. Kyler Caron and RJ Gross also had two hits for Katahdin Trust, while Zachariah Morse, Garrett Morneault, Storm Bonato, Noah Race and Jared Kilcollins all drove in runs.
K of C was paced by Torey Levesque, Will Bridges, Jonah Hudson, Gage Young and Mason Young with two hits each, with Elijah Ruiz also knocking out an RBI single.
Major League baseball
For the start of humid week 5 in Major League action, Kiwanis hosted the Elks. Kiwanis pitcher Cooper Madore earned the win on the mound only allowing three hits. Offensively for Kiwanis Josiah Morse, Ryan Player and Cooper Madore all had extra base hits and for the Elks Khasen Lowe, Grant Steward and William Knowles all had doubles. Defensively Grant Bridges, Michael Mahon, Isaac Devine, Marcus Ouellette, Caleb Cyr, Jake Kinney, Brad Kinney, David Kofstad, Steven Kinney and Devin Grant all made key plays for both teams. Kiwanis won 16-6.
At the end of the week an in-house round robin took place. The first game featured Kiwanis taking on Rotary. Brycen Libby had eight K’s while his nemesis Cooper Madore had eight K’s as well. For Rotary Brycen Libby had two hits, and Alex Brewer chipped in a hit.
For Kiwanis Grant Bridges and Nick Bartlett both had two hits while Josiah Morse and Cooper Madore both added hits. Kiwanis won 8-2.
The second game was hosted by Rotary who took on the Elks. Sam Gray earned the win for Rotary; helping his cause offensively was Logan Michaud with two hits, Gray helping himself with three hits and Jason Bartley adding a hit.
For the Elks Grant Stewart had three hits on two at bats, while Bradley Kinney and Steven Kinney both had nice lined shots. Rotary won by a score of 7-6.
The last game of the round robin and the week for Major League was Elks hosting Kiwanis. The winning pitcher was Ryan Player earning five K’s through three innings helping him at the dish was Nick Bartlett with two triples, Josiah Morse, Cooper Madore, Ryan Player, Grant Bridges and Caleb Cyr all having singles.
For the Elks Jake Kinney and Bradley Kinney had the two sole hits. Kiwanis won 11-3.
Pony League baseball
The start of the Pony League week featured first-place Mapleton taking on the second-place Rod Brewer Designs boys. Offensively for RBD Isaac Lajoie had two doubles and adding hits were Corey Belanger, Cody Flannery, Ben Buckley, Aaron Kofstad, Chase Norton and Ryder Soucy. Defensively for RBD were Kyle Goupile, Keegan Lowe, Matthew Tilley and Corey Soucy, but making possibly the play the year was Evan Waddell diving to the third baseline and snapping a frozen rope over to first for a band-band out. RBD lost 10-6.
For the final game of the week, the Wildcats took on Fort Fairfield. Unfortunately, for Fort, Jacob Player was in the zone on the mound striking out 18 batters out of 21, and ad additional out came from Wilder York snap throwing a Fort base runner out at second base. Wildcats won 12-1.
Girls softball
Thunder 12, Mudcats 11
The Thunder scored five runs in the top of the fourth and played great defense in the bottom of the fourth to hold on for a 12-11 girls softball victory. Brittany Wilson led the Thunder with two doubles and a homerun. Kali Ward and Shelby Shaw contributed by scoring three runs each followed by Kassidy Voisine who scored twice. Darrian Corey and Jessica Cameron provided the late-inning defense to secure the victory for the Thunder.
The Mudcats where led offensively by Emma Kinney with four hits which included two triples. Alexis Bell also had a good day at the plate with four singles. Madison Fournier had three hits followed by Hailey Cameron with two hits.
Monday was a very busy day with three games. The morning started off with the Mudcats and Thunder. This game was not decided until the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mudcats put five runs on the board in the top of the fifth to take a four run lead. The Thunder was able to score five runs in the bottom of the fifth for an 11-10 victory.
Kali Ward scored three of the Thunder’s runs followed by Megan McKnight, Brittany Wilson, Shelby Shaw and Jessica Cameron with two apiece. Kali Ward pitched four strong innings only allowing five runs and Brittany Wilson anchored the defense from behind the plate.
The Mudcats put up a strong effort led offensively by Hailey Cameron with two hits, which included a double and triple with three runs scored. Taylor Williams and Matteah Michaud each scored twice. Emma Kinney, Alexis Bell and Jordi Legassie accounted for the other runs.
The second game of the day was a pitching duel between Emma Kinney of Mudcats and Olivia Hudson of Rockhounds. Emma struck out eight while only allowing three walks and five hits. Olivia Hudson was equal to the challenge to earn the 5-4 victory for the Rockhounds. Olivia struck out six while only allowing one walk and five hits.
The Mudcats where led offensively by Taylor Williams who hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth to get the Mudcats within one run. Emily Colligan, Emma Kinney and Jordi Legassie provided one hit each.
Kelsey Gilson led the Rockhound offense with three hits including two doubles. Megan Seward scored two runs and had a double and triple on the day. Bailee Robichaud, Olivia Hudson and Kelsey Gilson accounted for the other three runs.
The final game of the day had the undefeated Thunder facing the Rockhounds. The Thunder where able to pull away in the final inning to secure their undefeated record with a 13-11 win. Megan Seward was the offensive leader for the Rockhounds as she hit for the cycle, which included a single, double, triple and homerun. Kelsey Gilson and Bailee Robichaud contributed three hits each.
The Thunder where led offensively by Brittany Wilson with three hits and three runs followed by Megan McKnight with a hit and three runs, and Lee Ireland with three runs. Defensively, Shelby Shaw, Jessica Cameron and Brittany Wilson ran a great relay to get a Rockhound player out at the plate that was trying to stretch a triple into a homerun. The Thunder also held the Rockhounds to one run in the bottom or the fifth to hold on for the victory. Lee Ireland got the complete game win on the mound for the Thunder.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department will be holding a meeting for those interested in playing in a flag football league this fall on Thursday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the center.
