The Mapleton Lions Club expert chefs wish to thank all those who came out to Mapleton Lions Chicken Barbecue on Friday night of Mapleton Daze. More than 400 chicken dinners were served, according to head chef, Lion Maurice White, who was ably assisted by expert chefs Lions Frank Richards, Dale McHatten and Tim Graham. Lion Dennis Hoffses, sauce expert chef, supervised the serving of the barbecued chicken. This year, Lion Paul “Mr. Mapleton” Grendell was the club’s customer service manager who received many positive compliments on the quality of the meals served. The dinner was a great start to the Mapleton Daze weekend.
On Mapleton Daze Saturday and Sunday, the Mapleton Lions Club Chefs were busy again serving Italian sausage sandwiches, hamburgers and chicken dinners at the Maple Meadow Farm Festival. Again the chefs thank all who came to the festival and visited the Mapleton Lions food tent. Food sales went so well, Lion Chefs Frank Richards, Dale McHatten and Dennis Hoffses, along with Assistant Chefs Kevin Nightingale and Bruce Guerrette, completely sold out all of the food. The club wishes to thank their food suppliers: Coca Cola, Lepage Bakeries and Star-City IGA for their support in these two fund-raising events. All of the funds raised are used for Mapleton Lion Charities. All the Mapleton Lions look forward to seeing everyone next year.

The Mapleton High School Class of 1950 celebrated its 60th reunion at the home of classmate Malcolm Brown and his wife, Claudine. Class members attending were Hope (Turner) Noe, Margaret (Thompkins) Damore, Winnifred (Carter) Beaulieu, Malcolm Brown, Winston Bagley, Eugene Hoffses, Floyd Ellis, Carl Winslow and the Rev. Ronald Walton. Guests were Claudine Brown, Althea Walton, Wilma Winslow, Marie Bagley, Goldie Ellis and Norma Turner.
The class members reminisced about the 11 members who had passed away in the past 60 years, and then gave a short report on their past 60 years. Damore read a letter from Janice (Kierstead) Baughman, who is living in Pennsylvania, and reported on other members who could not attend the reunion. Refreshments were served and “Happy Birthday” was sung to Floyd Ellis before the cake was cut. Damore, Wilma Winslow and Malcolm Brown presented gifts to everyone.
Class members attended Sunday services at the West Chapman Advent Christian Church where classmate, Rev. Ronald Walton, served as guest speaker.
The class wishes to express their appreciation to Damore for organizing both the 50th and 60th reunions.
On Saturday, June 26, the Mapleton High School Annual Alumni Banquet was held at the Mapleton Elementary School cafeteria. Classes represented were from 1937 to 1963.
After a brief get-together meeting classmates and reminiscing over memorabilia and yearbooks, a catered dinner was enjoyed. Following the dinner, a short business meeting was conducted by President Joye Buck. A report was given by Katie Buck regarding the annual Jerry Dow and Merlyn Buck Memorial Walk. To date, donations have reached the $20,000 mark. The walk is in its 10th year and all contributions are designated for a scholarship fund.
Linda Hubbard reported the tri-town scholarships awarded this year. A total of 10 $1,000 scholarships were given to deserving students for 2010. The Class of 1954 has for several years given a Community Service Award at the banquet. This year’s award, presented by Al Watt, went to Joye Buck.
After a “rousing” program of dancing girls, songs and skits offered by the Class of 1960, celebrating their 50th reunion, the evening concluded with the singing of “God Bless America.”
The West Chapman Advent Christian Church, located on the West Chapman Road, will be hosting a Ladies Fellowship Saturday, July 24. The scheduled guest speaker will be Brenda Cross. All area ladies are encouraged to attend. There will be two sessions with a lunch being served between each session. More details will follow in next week’s column.
The Mapleton Ladies Extension would like to thank all those who purchased raffle tickets on their specialty baskets during the Mapleton Daze weekend. The patriotic basket was won by Brenda Donovan, the Tuscany basket was won by Michelle Longley, the garden basket was won by Sally Lewin, and the this ‘n that basket went to David Cheney. Thank you for supporting the Mapleton Ladies Extension.
The Mapleton Daze Committee randomly selected the wagon and bicycle winners during their annual festivities. Winning the John Deere wagon, donated in memory of Carroll “Papa” Langille Sr., was four-year-old Allyson Lizotte. Winning the red wagon, donated by the Mapleton ATV Club, was three-year-old Ryder Chandler. Nine-year-old Tressa Salch won the small girls bike, donated by Aroosta Cast, Inc. and six-year-old Chase Guerrette won the small boys bike, donated by Hogan Tire. Ten-year-old Camryn Langille won the large girls bike, donated by Star City Sanitation and nine-year-old Jacob Parlin won the large boys bike, donated by Clukey’s Auto Supplies. The Committee thanks all those who faithfully donate a wagon or bicycle every year! Your continued support is greatly appreciated!
The camping season is now upon us, and the staff is extremely excited about the upcoming weeks at camp to witness to the campers and have a great time doing it! There are a number of exciting activities and Bible lessons planned. The Park will be offering laser tag and has a new low ropes course! If you have not registered your child(ren), you are encouraged you to do soon, so the Park may plan accordingly. By registering 10 days early, you can save $25 on your child’s registration fee. Encourage your children to invite as many friends as possible! What better place for your children to spend a week than Christian camping at Baptist Park!

The Mapleton United Baptist Church will be hosting Vacation Bible School at the church July 19-23 from 12:30-3 p.m. with a closing program scheduled for Friday, July 23 at 3 p.m. The weeklong Bible school will be once again led by Josh and Melanie Duncan. All children ages 4-10 are welcome to attend. Older youth are encouraged to volunteer as helpers.
The United Methodist Church will be hosting its weekly luncheon Friday, July 16 at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
