Mapleton’s Southside Cemetery

receives new flagpole

MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

Maynard and Joye Buck have returned home from their Floridian winter, but didn’t come back alone. Accompanying them on their long drive north was a new flagpole!

While in Florida, Maynard’s brother, Blake Buck, gave him a flagpole and Maynard knew immediately where to install it. He decided to haul it to Aroostook County and replace the old pole at Southside Cemetery on the West Chapman Road in Mapleton.
Upon his return home, Maynard enlisted the help of his cousin, Clyde Buck, to assist him with the necessary concrete work to install the new pole. But before the new pole could be erected, the old pole (along with the bucket it had been buried in) had to be removed. After the men installed the new pole, they even took some time to do a little cleaning up, straightening some of the headstones that had been battered by the weight of the snow over the winter. Maynard purchased a new flag and a subtle solar light that he installed halfway up the pole to keep the flag illuminated at night.
Thank you, Buck men, for your donation of the pole, materials, and your muscle to see to it that one of our community’s cemeteries looks presentable and respectable!

MAYNARD AND CLYDE BUCK of Mapleton recently replaced the old flagpole at Southside Cemetery in Mapleton with a new pole donated by Blake Buck. Once the men removed the old pole, a new American flag was hung, and a subtle solar light was installed halfway up the pole to assure that Old Glory remains lit at night.

Rec news

Applications are now available at the Town Office for the highly anticipated summer recreation activities! Melanie Mowbray is returning for her second year as Rec Director! In an effort to utilize the resources available in our community, she has made plans to add several new options for this summer including basketball, volleyball, flag football for 13-16-year-olds, “fun games,” and kickball for the younger children. Older youth will also be invited to play during the one-hour block reserved for “fun games.” The fun games category will be offered Monday through Friday at various times depending on the age group. This new option in the schedule will allow children a chance to play tag games, Frisbee, kickball, and many other exciting outdoor running games.
The schedule this year is set up on a rotating basis, in one-hour increments with activities planned for children ages 3-16. In addition to the new activities planned, the same popular ones will still be offered – swimming lessons, t-ball/baseball, arts and crafts, and tennis. The fees for residents are $10 per activity per child with a maximum fee per child of $20. The maximum fee per family is $40. For non-residents, the fee for one child is $15 per activity with a maximum fee per child of $30. The maximum fee for a non-resident family is $60.
Melanie welcomes any questions! You can contact her at the Town Office at 764-3754 or via e-mail at melanieomowbray@gmail.com. After an overwhelming response to the potential discontinuation of the Mapleton, Chapman, and Castle Hill summer rec program, it is now time to follow through with our promise to support our own tri-community program! Please register your child(ren) for a summer full of fun activities in our own backyard!
