The Caribou Vikings lost a pair of games at home Monday, but have still guaranteed themselves a spot in the upcoming Eastern Maine Class B softball tournament, which gets under way next Tuesday.     Caribou is currently in sixth place in the division with its 8-7 record. A victory over Presque Isle at home this afternoon should allow the Vikes to avoid having to play in a preliminary game and put them straight into the quarterfinal round.
In Class D, Limestone-MSSM has struggled down the stretch, having lost two of three last week, but are still sitting in second place in the rankings at 10-3 entering its final regular season game against Madawaska.
Fort Fairfield (4-11) has a slight chance to get into the coveted top nine, but needs a win over Central Aroostook in its finale and some other breaks to fall its way. Washburn completes its slate at home against East Grand this afternoon and hopes to break into the win column for the first time this season after an 0-15 start.
Summaries of games played through Monday are as follows:
Ellsworth 22, Caribou 0 – The Vikings suffered their most lopsided loss of the season in the first game of a doubleheader played at Caribou Monday.
Ashley Smith hit two home runs and a double, knocked in five runs and scored four times to lead the Eagles to the shutout victory.
Jamie Martin, Ashley Doucette, Danielle Violette and Danielle Soucy all singled for Caribou’s only hits of the contest.
Ellsworth 6, Caribou 2 – Ellsworth also prevailed in game two as a three-run rally in the top of the sixth broke open a close game.
Martin singled twice, Rebecca McDougal tripled and losing pitcher Emily Staples tallied eight strikeouts.
Madawaska 14, Fort Fairfield 6 – At Fort Fairfield Monday, Erin Dugal ripped three triples and drove in five runs to lead Madawaska to victory over Fort Fairfield.
Courtney Churchill had a double and a single and an RBI for Fort Fairfield.
Caribou 4, John Bapst 3 — In the first game of a doubleheader played in Caribou Saturday, the Vikings swept visiting John Bapst with a pair of one-run wins.
In the first game, Jordyn Doucette singled and scored the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth. A. Doucette singled twice and knocked in two runs for Caribou. McDougal tripled and singled.
Caribou 7, John Bapst 6 – In game two, Martin and A. Doucette each had three singles and Soucy doubled and singled for the Vikings. Katie Hammond led John Bapst with three singles.
Fort Kent 9, Limestone-MSSM 6 — At Limestone Friday, Eagle Hattie Welsh doubled, singled and drove in two runs, but it was not enough as Fort Kent beat Limestone-MSSM.
Limestone-MSSM 5, Fort Fairfield 4 — At Limestone Thursday, Ashlynn Kelley knocked in Danielle Pelkey in the bottom of the seventh inning for the game-winning run as the Eagles beat Fort Fairifeld.
Courtney Churchill led the Tigers with a double, triple, RBI and run. Victoria St. Pierre paced the Eagles with a double and 2 RBIs.
Fort Kent 10, Limestone-MSSM 8 — At Fort Kent May 26, Hattie Walsh had a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, pulling the Eagles within two runs, but that was as close as they would get to Fort Kent. Chelsea Leighton had two singles in the loss.
Caribou 18, Houlton 5 — At Caribou May 25, the Vikings mercied Houlton, but the game was much closer than the final score indicated.
“Going into the bottom of the third, the score was 7-5, with Houlton getting three runs in the second and two runs in the third,” Caribou coach Ryan Deprey said. “So, yes we did run-rule them, but it was closer than the score would show.”
    J. Doucette had three hits, while Martin, Sare Damboise, McDougal and Soucy added two hits apiece for the Vikes.
