Girls 2nd, boys 4th at PVCs

    BAR HARBOR – The Caribou girls placed second and their coach, Roy Alden, was named coach of the year to highlight Friday’s Penobscot Valley Conference championship meet, which was held at Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor.

    Timothy Freme of the Caribou Vikings stays ahead of Bangor’s Sam Nisbett during the 3,200-meter run at Friday’s Penobscot Valley Conference championship meet held at Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor. Freme ended up in second place to Nisbett by 3.28 seconds with a finishing time of 10:06.86.

    The Viking boys were fourth in the rankings. The Bangor Rams captured the team titles in the meet.
    Next for the Caribou track team is the Class B state meet, which will be held this Saturday, June 5 at Windham High School.
    The Fort Fairfield and Limestone/MSSM teams will compete in the Class C state meet at Foxcroft Academy, also on Saturday, June 5.
    The top individual performances for the Viking girls from Friday included a 1-2 finish by Paige Small and Emily Soderberg in the 1,600-meter race walk. Small finished in 8:09.08 and Soderberg crossed the line in 8:13.27.
    Also, Mackenzie Belyea was second in 12:35.89 and Mary Jo Sheehan third in 12:37.33 in the 3,200-meter run; Caribou’s 4 X 400-meter relay team of Sarae Sager, Katie Plourde, Dayna Michaud and Olivia Sleeper placed second in 4:27.49; the girls 4 X 800-meter relay team of Michaud, Plourde, Meredith Sleeper and Kendra Stephens placed second in 10:34.16; three athletes placed in the javelin throw, with Danielle MacDonald third (98 feet), Jessica Zbylut fourth (94-8) and Morgan Swan fifth (92-2); Swan also took third in the discus (82-4) and fourth in the shot put (29-8.25).
    Other Vikes placing in the top-six in their respective events were Sager, fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (17.62 seconds) and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (51.01); O. Sleeper, fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.14 seconds), fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.81) and third in the 400-meter run (1:01.34); Kelly Kashian, fourth in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches); Ginger Kieffer, fifth in the pole vault (7-0); Kaysie Pelletier, sixth in the race walk (9:07.07); Emily Anderson, fifth in the discus (80-4); and Hannah Hebert, sixth in the triple jump (30-1).
    The 4 X 100-meter relay team, made up of Sager, Annie Collins, G. Kieffer and Reanna Plourde, was sixth in 54.7 seconds.
    Caribou scored 99.33 points in the meet. Bangor led the way with 146.33. Brewer was third with 91.33, followed by Old Town (80), MDI (63.5), Hampden (59.5), Ellsworth (18), Hermon (18) and Presque Isle (13).
    The Viking boys took four of the top five positions in the 1,600-meter race walk to highlight their competition. Jared Sleeper had the winning time of 7:05.01, Finn Bondeson was second in 7:06.47, Jake Michaud was fourth in 8:16.11 and Josh Kovach was fifth in 8:26.78.
    Andrew Adams also picked up a victory for Caribou, winning the shot put with a distance of 44 feet, 9.5 inches.
    Christian Sleeper was the runner-up in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:34.31, six seconds behind winner Ben Chapman of Ellsworth, and he also took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.05, just .47 seconds behind Darik Frye of Hampden Academy.
    Others placing were Tim Freme, second in the 3,200-meter run (10:06.86); D.J. Flynn, third in the 3,200 (10:41.27); and Matt Till, fifth in the 400-meter dash (53.16 seconds) and fourth in the high jump (5-4).
    The Caribou 4 X 400-meter relay team, consisting of C. Sleeper, J. Sleeper, Freme and Till, was fifth in 3:42.33.
    The Viking boys scored 72 points in the meet. Bangor was the easy winner with 140, followed by MDI (79) and Hampden (74). Caribou finished ahead of Brewer (70), Old Town (60), Hermon (53), Ellsworth (34) and Presque Isle (7).
