The regular season comes to a close this afternoon, and it doesn’t appear that any of the area’s baseball teams will be moving on to compete in the playoffs. Despite Caribou’s doubleheader split against Ellsworth Monday, the Vikes (7-8) are in 14th place in Eastern Maine Class B. Even a victory over Presque Isle this afternoon in its regular season finale will leave Caribou short of qualifying for the post-season, as only the top 10 teams will advance.
Caribou was beaten in a Saturday doubleheader by John Bapst by the lopsided scores of 10-0 and 21-3.
In Class D, Fort Fairfield (6-8) is 11th and Limestone-MSSM (2-13) and Washburn (2-13) are tied for 15th. All three teams have one game remaining this week, but none of the three teams have enough points available to crack the necessary top nine.
Summaries of games played through Monday are as follows:
Ellsworth 12, Caribou 5 – The Eagles took game one of the doubleheader played Monday in Caribou as Jordan Carter had three hits and three RBIs to lead his team’s 13-hit attack.
Royce Landeen and Caleb Chapman had RBI doubles for the Vikes. Cameron Anderson was handed the pitching loss, with Landeen holding the Eagles scoreless over the final three innings in a solid relief effort.
Caribou 9, Ellsworth 7 – The Vikes pulled off the upset in game two as Garrett Jordan doubled twice, singled and drove in a run for the winners. Anderson doubled and singled, drove in three runs and stole three bases for Caribou, who scored three times in the bottom of the sixth for the comeback win.
Matt Kamm and Cody Thibodeau did the pitching for Caribou.
Fort Kent 26, LCS/MSSM 17 – In a game that included a total of 43 run and 58 hits, the Warriors got the better of Limestone-MSSM in the slugfest played on the Eagles’ home field Friday.
Jared Soucy hit for the cycle with a three-run home run, a triple, a double and a single and drove in five runs while leading the Warriors.
Nick Whitehead and Nate Tucker each had two singles and a double for the Eagles. Zach Cote contributed two singles.
Washburn 7, Ashland 6 – The Beavers won for only the second time all season when Jordan McLaughlin doubled home a run and Sal Viola added a sacrifice fly to key Washburn’s two-run rally in the top of the seventh last Wednesday in Ashland.
Viola also doubled and Nick Bragg hit a two-run double in the sixth to help the Beavers rally from an early 6-1 deficit. Tony Viola got the pitching victory, with Kyle McLaughlin retiring the only batter he faced on a long fly ball with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh for the save.
Fort Kent 17, LCS/MSSM 3 – Soucy homered, doubled twice, singled and drove in five runs as Fort Kent earned the home victory last Wednesday.
Austin Dow Smith singled twice and Cote singled in a run for Limestone-MSSM.
Caribou 10, Houlton 4 – Last Tuesday at Caribou, Anderson and andeen each had a double, a single and two RBIs to help Caribou defeat the Shiretowners.
Lance Lamothe doubled and singled for the Vikings.
