ImageImage    HOULTON – Eugene P. Byron 84, went home to be with his Lord May 27, 2010.  Surrounded by his family, he died peacefully at his residence on Military Street. He was born August 14, 1925 in Houlton, the son of Stearle J. and Carrie (Sawyer) Byron.
Gene married Lavina Cogswell on December 8, 1951, after returning home from serving in the United States Army in the Philippines and Japan from 1945-1947. He worked as a dairy farmer for over 35 years, and for the past 21 years has enjoyed brightening people’s lives delivering  flowers for Chadwick Florist. He was a faithful member of the Houlton Wesleyan Church and his pastimes included gardening, bird-watching and visiting with friends and family. He especially treasured time spent with his grandchildren for whom he prayed each and every day. More important than what he did is who he was. Gene was a gentleman who loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was kind and patient; a sincere man of integrity. He was a man of few words who commanded attention when he did speak. He was dearly loved and his was a life well-lived. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15.
Gene is survived by his wife Lavina (Cogswell) Byron of Houlton; his daughter Carole Bates and her husband John of Houlton; his son Roger Byron and his wife Laurie of Benton; Jeff Turcotte, who was like a son to Gene, and his wife Cheryl of Cadyville, NY; six grandchildren, Peter Bates, James Bates & Leah Bates all of Houlton,  Caleb Byron, Elayna Byron & Lydia Byron all of Benton; two special sisters-in-law Geraldine Dunn and Norma Bates both of Houlton; one brother-in-law William Cogswell of New York City;  many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Marjorie Stewart. Friends called at the Dunn Funeral Home Saturday 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service was held Sunday 1:30 p.m. at the Houlton Wesleyan Church with Revs. Wayne Robertson and David Rowe officiating. Interment was in the Linneus Cemetery. Gifts may be made in Gene’s memory to the Houlton Wesleyan Church or Hospice of Aroostook, c/o Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park Street, Houlton, 04730.
