Houlton soldier awarded Purple Heart

SSgt. James Carmichael was awarded the Purple Heart in an official military ceremony on April 9. The Houlton native received his honor for being wounded in a roadside bombing while serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan in March 2009.
He is now at home with his family where he is currently stationed in Ft. Drum. N.Y. Carmichael is scheduled to be back in the Houlton area during the Fourth of July holiday.
The Purple Heart was established by General George Washington at Newburgh, N.Y., on August 7, 1782, during the Revolutionary War. It is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917 with the U.S. military.
