Teams eyeing playoff run

    As of Tuesday morning, the Houlton Shiretowners were the only Class C baseball team in the playoff picture in seventh position, while in Class D, Southern Aroostook and Katahdin teams are third and fourth, respectively.

    In softball, the SACS girls are ranked first, with Katahdin in fourth and GHCA in eighth.

    In Class C, the top six teams are seated in the quarterfinals, with teams in seventh through 10th playing a preliminary game for the right to advance.

    In Class D, the top seven teams are safely into the tournament, with one preliminary game between the eighth and ninth-seeded teams.

    The Houlton Shiretowners defeated Fort Kent and Hodgdon twice on the week.

    Last Friday, the Shires played a doubleheader with Fort Kent and Hodgdon. In the first game, the Shires jumped on visiting Fort Kent early for a 5-0 lead after five innings, picking up a 7-3 victory.

    Mike Ring led Houlton’s offense with a triple and double and drove in a run, while Hunter Hanning singled twice and brought in a run.

    In the nightcap, the Shires overtook visiting Hodgdon, 13-2.

    Houlton led 4-2 after the third and extended their lead, 7-2 in the fifth before striking for a six-run sixth for the winning margin.

    Ian Gervais fired a two-hitter, striking out 10, and was backed offensively by Parker Sanderson who doubled, singled and knocked in two runs. Jordan Bragan doubled and singled and brought in a run, while Tanner Caron singled twice to plate a run.

    Ryan Wellington led Hodgdon with a two-run single in the third, while Levi Scott also singled. The Hawks slip to 4-9 and are currently in 15th position in the latest Heal Point standings.

    Last Wednesday, the Hawks lost to visiting Houlton, 24-9 on a rainy day.

    The Hawks led 5-4 after the first, but Houlton took a 7-6 lead in the second before the score was tied 9-all in the third. But, Houlton broke the game open in the fifth, scoring 12 runs.

    Gervais paced Houlton’s offense with a three-run homer in the fifth, three singles to drive in five runs, while Josh Harvey tagged a two-run home run in the third, along with a two-run double in the fifth. Ring also hit a two-run homer in the second and an RBI-single, while Sanderson singled twice and knocked in two runs.

    For Hodgdon, Mike Brambosz drilled a two-run homer in the first inning and Dan McGillicuddy added a run-scoring base hit.

    On Monday, the Hawks overtook host East Grand, 20-7 behind Jake Tidd’s 5-for-5 effort, including a triple, double, three singles and three RBIs. Nick Lunn singled twice and tripled to drive in two runs, while Andrew Lane tripled and doubled.

    The Hawks led 4-3 after the first inning and then broke the game open with a 10-run second inning.

    For East Grand, Aaron Henn doubled, singled and brought in two runs, while Abe Brittain singled twice and knocked in a run.

    Last Friday, the SACS Warriors shut out host Washburn 16-0 behind Travis Casey’s two-hitter, with seven strikeouts and three walks. The Warriors took an 11-0 lead after the second inning, as Dakota Sleeper led the offense with a pair of hits to knock in three runs. Chris Casey hit a run-scoring double and put down an RBI sacrifice bunt. Cody Robinson doubled.

    Robinson led the Warriors to an 11-1 win last Thursday over Limestone/MSSM with a solo blast in the third, a double, singled and knocked in four runs. Sleeper stroked a three-run homer in the sixth and singled, while Jesse Small singled twice and brought in two runs. Pat Goodall picked up the win on the mound, firing a two-hitter.

    Last Wednesday, the Warriors overpowered East Grand 20-2 in five innings.

    Sleeper hit a grand slam in the second, doubled and singled twice for six RBIs. Goodall tripled and doubled for the winners.

    For the Vikings, Abe Brittain singled twice.

    Katahdin split with Bangor Christian in Stacyville last Friday, taking the first game 11-1 before falling in the second one, 7-2.

    In the opener, Brandon Robinson threw five innings of three-hit ball, striking out seven. Mark McGraw led the offense with a three-run homer and a two-run double. Brady McNally chipped in with a double and a pair of base hits, while Kolby Gallagher added a solo shot and single.

    Katahdin led 6-0 after the third and added their last runs in the fifth.

    In the second game, Chris Cloukey hit an RBI single and Gallagher singled and scored for Katahdin, which scored all its runs in the bottom of the seventh.

    In girls’ softball, the Lady Warriors trounced host Washburn, 37-12 last Friday.

    Olivia Raymond singled twice, tripled, homered and knocked in four runs to pace SACS. Liz Goodall homered and singled twice to bring in three runs.

    The Lady Warriors edged visiting Limestone 9-8 last Thursday.

    SACS led 9-6 after the sixth, but Limestone (9-1) came back with two runs in the top of the seventh on Victoria St. Pierre’s single. With two outs and the tying run at second, SACS’ Evangeline Goodall struck out the next batter to end the game.

    Katie Goodall singled twice for SACS and had two RBIs, while Bree Bubar doubled and singled to bring in a run for the winners.

    Last Wednesday, the Southern Aroostook girls outlasted visiting East Grand, 12-8, after the game was called in the sixth due to rain.

    Liz Goodall banged an in-the-park homer, tripled and singled and knocked in three runs to pace SACS, while Raymond doubled twice and drove in a run and Kaitlyn Sommers singled twice.

    For East Grand, Liz Gilman doubled and singled, while Sharlene Maynard singled.

    Last Tuesday, the Lady Warriors defeated visiting Fort Fairfield, 16-4.

    Evangeline Goodall tripled and doubled for two RBIs and Raymond singled twice and knocked in a run for SACS.

    At Houlton on Monday, the Katahdin girls scored in every inning to overpower host GHCA, 23-2.

    Kali Rush led the Katahdin offense with three single and a double, while Dani-Beth Cyr added another three singles.

    For GHCA, Kiki Smart, Makayla Wiley and Destinee Neureuther all singled.

    The Lady Cougars are 10-2, while GHCA is 4-8.

    Katahdin swept Bangor Christian last Friday in Stacyville, 9-2 and 16-7.

    In the opener, Myah Smallwood singled twice and knocked in a run, while Melissa Duffy used her speed to score three runs, two by stealing home.

    In the nightcap, Megan Merry hit two singles and knocked in two runs, while Olivia McNally banged a two-run single and Makayla Patterson doubled.

    In Class C, the Lady Shires are ranked 14th, while Hodgdon is 18th.

    In recent games, the Hodgdon girls fell to Fort Fairfield, 19-7 on Saturday.

    The visiting Lady Hawks and Tigers were tied at 6-all in the third, but Fort Fairfield would overtake Hodgdon in the late innings.

    Amanda Ryan led Hodgdon with a double and single to drive in two runs, while Kim Levesque and Annie Hare each had two singles.

    Last Friday, the Lady Shires were defeated 9-3 by visiting Fort Kent. The Warriors led 8-1 after five innings.

    Ashley Drew led Houlton with two singles to drive in two runs, while Megan Hannigan had a pair of base hits.

    Last Wednesday, the Lady Shires handed host Hodgdon an 18-6 loss.

    The Lady Shires were ahead 4-3, but opened the game up with a nine-run third. Hannigan belted a grand slam and doubled for six RBIs, while Drew doubled twice and singled for three RBIs. Taylor Bailey had two base hits and brought in a run.

    For Hodgdon, Taylor McGary and Hare each had run-scoring singles.
