Glubernatorial candidate Peter Mills visited the Maine Veterans’ Home in Caribou on May 17. Visiting with Mills, at left, were MVH Administrator Melissa Graham, Secretary/Treasurer of the MVH Board of Trustees Peter Meisburger and MVH Liaison Ray Guerrette.
“It was an honor to meet some of Maine’s many veterans,” Mills said. “This tour is a reminder that thousands of Mainers are serving our country overseas,” said Mills. “While Togus and our six veterans homes are paid for primarily through federal funds, state support is also an important component. It is our job to manage them and advocate for the care of our veterans.”
After touring the facility, Mills followed Miesburger and Guerrette to the Caribou Memorial Park to view the grounds. The park opened in 2003.
Maine has over 153,000 veterans, more than 600 are residents in one of the six Maine Veterans’ Homes. The Maine Veterans’ Homes are located in Caribou, Machias, Bangor, Augusta, South Paris and Scarborough.
Mills fought on Navy destroyers in the Vietnam War and his daughter, Kate, is currently on active duty in the Army.
