LIMESTONE — The dedication of a new basketball court at the Limestone Community School on May 3 to the memory of Trevor Holmquist is a symbol of how the young student remains in the hearts of his classmates, educators and friends.
An active, well known and equally well liked child, Trevor was in fourth grade when a house fire consumed his life.
“He was a line runner for high school soccer, he was taking music classes with Mrs. Minette, he was a boy who was a friend among his classmates,” recalled his former teacher Alva King, “he was this joyfull, effervescent, full of life kind of boy.”
After his passing in 2006, Trevor’s classmates wanted to dedicate a basketball hoop in his honor. After holding fund-raiser after fund-raiser, the students had finally saved up enough pennies to purchase the hoop; they mailed out their money and waited for Trevor’s hoop to arrive.
The hoop never came. The company the students had purchased the hoop from went under and despite thorough attempts by the LCS faculty and staff, the fund-raised money for was gone.
Determined to memorialize a piece of the school for their lost classmate, the students started fund-raising again and this time, the former LCS principal was able to secure grant money to expedite the process.
While the funds were being secured, the project grew. What started out as a basketball hoop in a parking lot turned into a full-fledge court honoring the memory of Trevor Holmquist.
Trevor’s classmates, who are now in the eighth grade, and members of his family were present for the ceremony.
His father, John and his brother Shawn sunk the first shots on Trevor’s court.
During the ceremony, presentations were made by Autumn Beauchamp and Garrett Elliott. Poems were recited by Rebecca King and Alva King.
