Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on May 11 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. There were two special speakers.
The first speaker was Dixie Shaw of Catholic Charities. She has been with them for 23 years and works very hard to “Feed The County.” The thrift store facility in Caribou offers home supplies, furniture, appliances and some building materials at a fraction of their cost. All proceeds go towards helping run the food bank, which serves 24 food pantries throughout the county. In 2008, they served over 33,000 people through the food pantries. There were 4,492 volunteer hours and several loads of food trucked into the local warehouse.
Catholic Charities purchases food through the Good Shepherd Food Bank with limited dollars and all other food is donated by businesses, individuals and organizations. Food and monetary donations are accepted and appreciated at any time. They also accept donations of used furniture, appliances, household items and building materials. They can use volunteers anytime to help with sorting food, unloading trucks and processing donated household items. To learn more about how you can help, contact the Caribou office at 496-3243.
Special speaker Peter Martin, with Black Bear Entertainment, spoke of the Oxford Resort Casino, which will be on the ballot this November. This will be a full-service entertainment resort that will attract thousands of new tourists to Maine.
At 42 percent, this casino will be the highest-taxed casino in the nation. Twenty-five million dollars would be used to support K-12 classroom learning throughout Maine each year. Aroostook County schools would receive over $1,342,000 yearly, while CAHS could expect almost $22,000 of this figure. Around seven million would be used for scholarships to University of Maine and Community College students.
This resort is a Maine effort built by Maine business people with a track record for creating jobs. For more information, go to www.promotemaine.com for more details.

Baked bean supper

The Mars Hill American Legion is having a Baked Bean Supper and bake sale on Friday, May 21, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the music room of Central Aroostook High School. The cost for the supper is $6, with children 6 and under free. We will have home-baked beans, salads and desserts.

     United Methodist Women

The May meeting of the Mars Hill United Methodist Women was held in the church vestry on May 10 at noon. After each enjoyed their sandwich, dessert, coffee and tea were served by the co-hostesses, Elaine Bailey and Donna Brewer.
After an hour of socializing, President Elaine Bailey opened the meeting by leading all in the UMW Purpose Pledge and Prayer. Members then told of their acts of kindness during the last month.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted as read. Thank-you notes were received from Camp Mechuwana, Homeless Services of Aroostook in Presque Isle and Frances Banks. Plans were made to have the annual Trash and Treasure Sale Aug. 28.
President Elaine will respond to the invitation from the Presque Isle UMW to attend a 7 p.m. “tea” at the Grant Memorial United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 25. There will be seven or eight attending.
June 14 is the annual “Out-to-Lunch” event for our UMW unit. A vote was taken and plans were made to go to the Elm Tree Diner in Houlton. Donna Brewer will make the arrangements and report later the number of ladies attending.
Joan Walsh and Diane Ketchum were the winners of the two beautiful plants that were centerpieces on the buffet table.
Elaine and Donna’s program was on mother’s and the home. Elaine read two appropriate sentimental poems, then suggested each one tell of a favorite memory of her mother. Although emotional at times, it was one of our favorite programs. After the benediction, the meeting was adjourned.
Members attending were: Elaine Bailey, Frances Banks, Joan Walsh, Ruth Sylvester, Alma Smith, Diane Ketchum, Donna Brewer, Joan Boone, Judy Sawin Stahnke and Clara Hussey.
