The beat goes on for the Caribou varsity girls tennis team. With three more victories last week, the Vikings improved to 8-0 on the season and are now atop the Eastern Maine Class B Heal Point standings.
As of press time Tuesday, Caribou led Camden Hills, also undefeated at 7-0, by less than one half a point. The Vikings’ tournament index is 75.8333 compared to 75.3472 for the Windjammers. Meanwhile, the Caribou boys have bounced back from their slow start and are now in sixth place in the rankings. The Vikings beat Fort Kent and Madawaska and were narrowly beaten by Presque Isle in action last week. The team’s record is now 4-4.
On Monday, the Caribou girls and boys both recorded shutout victories in Fort Kent. In the girls’ match, Jenna Selander (8 wins, 0 losses on the season) defeated Becca Martin, 8-2; Laura Collins (8-0) got past Sam Landry, 8-3; and Carlee Pinette (8-0) blanked Amelia Stevens, 8-0;
In doubles, Missy Nadeau and Liz Barbosa (7-1) were too much for Kiera Caron and Roxy Pelletier, winning by an 8-0 decision. In second doubles, Ashley Richards and Alexa Massey (8-0) topped Abby Stevens and Savannah Paradis, 8-2.
For boys in singles play, Ezra Duplissie-Cyr stopped Isaac Mitchell, 8-3; Nick Willey edged Alex Charette, 8-6; and Jon Ouellette downed Martin Doustou, 8-2;
In doubles, Phil Smith and Matt Coty defeated Logan Doak and Lucas Woodward, 8-2; while Lucien Caverhill and Tyler Willey doubled up on Alex Chasse and Cody Lozier, 8-4.
At Caribou Thursday, the Caribou girls beat Madawaska, 5-0, with Selander, Collins and Pinette all winning in singles and Nadeau-Barbosa and Richards-Massey prevailing in doubles. The Caribou boys gained some critical Heal Points in the 3-2 win over one of the top teams in Class C. The Vikings were paced by victories from Duplissie-Cyr (8-6 over Christian Lizotte) and Ouellette (8-2 over Matt Deschenes) in singles and Caverhill-T. Willey (8-2 over Aaron Thibeault and Greg Faucher) in doubles.
Last Tuesday was Caribou and Presque Isle’s second meeting of the season, this time at the University of Maine at Presque Isle courts. The Caribou boys showed improvement from their first meeting, a 5-0 loss, but dropped a 3-2 decision.
Caribou’s two victories were by Ouellette, who downed Chris Cawley, 8-1, and the doubles team of Coty and Smith, who got past Kyle Gilson and Emerson Castro, 8-4.
The Viking girls were once again 5-0 victors, as Selander, Collins and Pinette combined to drop just five games in singles play. The closest match was in first singles as Nadeau and Barbosa defeated Lindsay Michaud and Divya Bisht, 8-5, Richards and Massey easily defeated PI’s Elise Jones and Deidre Dicker, 8-1.
The Caribou teams will continue their regular season schedule today when they host Fort Kent beginning at 3:30 p.m.
A match against Old Town is slated for this Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by matches Monday against Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln and next Wednesday at home against Houlton. The playoffs begin June 1.
