PIPD supports drug return program
IN THE CITY
by Bill Scull
The Presque Isle Police Department continues to support and participate in the prescription Drug Return program that collects any unused or unwanted prescription medication or over the counter medications.
At the last event, 88 pounds of controlled substances (narcotics) were collected in Aroostook County and there was one 55-gallon drum full of the non-controlled medication. The aim of the program is to dispose of the medications in a safe and environmentally sound manner and to remove medications from the medicine cabinet in an effort to reduce drug involved crimes.
Studies have shown that flushing the medications, or disposing of them in a landfill, results in the drugs making their way into the local water table.
It is recommended that all drugs turned in, should be in their original container so they can be readily identified. Do not empty pills into one plastic bag, personal information can be redacted but the name of the drug should be left visible, for identification purposes. No personal information is collected or taken from the medication containers.
If a loved one passes away, a relative should check and remove all medications from the residence. The Presque Isle Police Department will accept any and all medications 24/7.
