The Caribou girls tennis team continues to roll in regular season play as the Vikings won four more matches last week and are now 5-0 overall. The Vikings are currently in fourth place in the Heal Point standings for Eastern Maine Class B, behind three other undefeated teams (Waterville, Ellsworth and Camden Hills).     The Viking boys broke into the win column after an 0-3 start, besting both Mount Desert Island and Houlton in home matches played Saturday and Monday. Caribou moved up to sixth place in the standings with the two victories.
In the Caribou girls’ latest triumph, a 5-0 home win over Houlton, singles players Jenna Selander, Laura Collins and Carlee Pinette combined to lose just two games in easy victories over their Shiretowner opponents.
The doubles teams were even more dominant, as the Missy Nadeau-Liz Barbosa and Ashley Richards-Alexa Massey duo were both triumphant by 8-0 scores.
On Saturday, Caribou dropped a set for the only time this season, but still managed a 4-1 win over MDI. Selander beat Grace Robbins, 8-1, in first singles, while Collins beat Julia Christie, 8-1, and Pinette doubled up on Mia Musetti, 8-4, in the other singles matches.
Nadeau and Barbosa were defeated by MDI’s Annika Sampson and Anna Worcester in No. 1 doubles, 8-3, but Richards and Massey prevailed in the second doubles match, 8-2.
The Vikings also beat John Bapst Friday and Madawaska two days earlier, both by 5-0 scores.
The Caribou boys tennis team experienced victory on two occasions after going winless in its first three matches.
The Vikes nipped Houlton Monday, 3-2, thanks to victories by both doubles teams. Phil Smith and Matt Coty teamed up to beat Cody Woods and D.J. McGary, 8-2, in No. 1 doubles, while Lucien Caverhill and Tyler Willey stopped the Shires’ Craig Thomas and Zach Ritchie, 8-3.
Ezra Duplissie-Cyr managed Caribou’s lone win in singles – an 8-6 win over Tyler Delano in the No. 2 position. In first singles, Nick Willey dropped an 8-3 decision to Houlton’s Zach Harvey, while Jon Ouellette was beaten by Luke Anderson in third singles, 8-3.
The Caribou boys’ first win of the season came on Saturday against MDI, 5-0. N. Willey beat Ian Carbone, 8-4, while Duplissie-Cyr topped Garrett Lee, 8-4, and Ouellette got past Andrew Dalton, 8-5.
In doubles action, Smith and Coty downed Mike Dunleavey and Ian Sampson, 8-3, while Caverhill and T. Willey was too much for Elliot Klaver and Caleb Cough by a score of 8-4.
Caribou dropped 3-2 decisions to both Madawaska and John Bapst earlier in the week.
The regional singles tournament will be held Saturday afternoon in Presque Isle, while regular season team competition also continues throughout the upcoming week.
