Ted, an 8-week-old Maine coon mix, has settled well in to the Halfway Home Pet Rescue (HHPR) environment and has been enjoying the luxuries of sharing a warm bed, litter, food and toys with his three litter mates Tonia, Tammy and Talia. The three will be available for adoption in approximately 10 days or as soon as they have completely recovered from their feral background. According to President of the HHPR Norma Milton, young feral kittens are easily tamed within a few days and can become very loving house pets. Each member of the “T” litter have a Maine coon look and are already litter box trained. Milton urges individuals to check out the HHRP fund-raiser this weekend during the Caribou City Wide Yard Sale at 11 Pioneer Avenue. “We have a huge assortment of household items and quality clothing for both adults and children,” she said, mentioning an error in the article last week. It was William and Karen Barker who donated $100 on the HHRP vet bills (not Mark). “Please know the gift was greatly appreciated,” Milton apologized. “Our vet bills do run about $1,000 a month and is the largest line item of our budget. Unfortunately, HHPR cats have been refused all other rescue options, and they are generally in desperate need of medical help,” she added. “We first ask each client if they have contacted the shelter their town has contracted with for stray services and then, second, we ask if they have contacted their police department for help.” If those avenues of help have been refused for any reason including the replies of “We are full” or “cats are free-roaming,” then the HHRP provides their services. “We do believe that the massive spay/neuter program that we provide is slowly making a mark in the over-population of cats in this area,” Milton said. “We have spayed/neutered several colonies of feral cats, helped some low-income families with spay vouchers, provided pet food for families in crises who can no longer afford food for their animals, and taken in dozens of injured, ill and abused cats.” Additional information about HHRP can be found by visiting petfinder.com or www.halfwayhomepetrrescue.org.
