Memories of first Earth Day

To the editor:
I just have to tell my story. I was a freshman at Presque Isle High School in 1970 and heard about the very first Earth Day! I was a member of Hi-Y/Tri/Hi Y (please forgive me if this is not exact!) I told my folks that this was the very first Earth Day and my friends and I needed to participate by cleaning up the garbage on the sides of the roads and they loved me enough to support me (maybe they should have thought twice!)

My crew (and if you can remember who you are — I thank you!), and my beloved Dad (who would be in charge of transporting) worked an entire Saturday thinking we could take the “roadside treasures” that we had found, back to the college for disposal — not so due to a lack of communication somewhere! After some phone calls somewhere, my beloved father was finally able to empty our family station wagon full of garbage to a place that at this point in my life, I can’t remember.
I’m proud to say that I can remember being a part of the first Earth Day and prouder still, to know that my poor Dad was behind me 100 percent even not knowing what he was getting himself into!
Thank you Dad, Mom and to all my friends who were a part of this very first Earth Day.
